Yesterday marked a triumphant day for Cuban music as one of its most popular Afro-Caribbean rhythms and dance forms, the Rumba, was listed a UNESCO World "Intangible" Heritage. During UNESCO's annual meeting in Addis Ababa, the committee, made up of 24 different countries decided to include Cuban Rumba in its list of humankind's protected goods as it deemed it a symbol of Cuban society, defending the right of cultural diversity based on mutual respect.
Despite easing the terms of the travel and trade embargo under outgoing president Barack Obama, U.S. citizens technically remain unable to go near idyllic coastal spots on the Caribbean island. Of course, most will flout the rule, but it’s interesting to take a look at what visitors to Cuba from various parts of the world do while on the island.
Silver Airways has become the first U.S airline to launch scheduled flights between Fort Lauderdale and Santiago de Cuba. The air carrier currently operates flights to several destinations in Cuba including Santa Clara, Camagüey, Cienfuegos, Holguín and the newly launched service to Cayo Coco. The flights will be served using 34-seat Saab 340B Plus turboprop planes.
