La Cocina De Lilliam Paladar
La Cocina de Lilliam was part of the first wave of Havana’s paladars when it opened back in the 1990s. Run by Lilliam Domínquez and husband Luis Ulloa, this charming restaurant in Miramar has since received much critical praise and several international figures have also dined here - including former U.S President Jimmy Carter in 2002.
Set within lush tropical gardens, La Cocina de Lilliam offers an idyllic spot for an evening meal and its picturesque outdoor patio is particularly popular with diners. The setting alone is worth the visit, but you’ll also get to sample a menu full of inspiring dishes that bring together local and international flavours in perfect harmony.
The starter menu presents a number of European-inspired offerings such as salmon soufflé, tuna tartle and an assortment of Spanish sausages. The main menu is particularly extensive and there’s a real variety of meat dishes that cater to a range of tastes. The numerous options include half roasted chicken with garlic sauce, a rich stewed lamb, glazed smoked pork loin or a wonderfully tender fillet mignon - which actually uses veal rather than beef, but the results are still quite delicious.
Beyond the meat dishes, you’ll discover a main menu dominated by fresh fish and seafood. Highlights worth sampling are the shrimp risotto, black squid ink rice with octopus, grilled fish steaks, lobster gratin (served with white sauce and melted cheese) and La Cocina de Lilliam’s huge paella - intended to be shared among three.
The choice of side dishes are all firm local favourites with fried ripe plantain, rice with corn, mashed sweet potato and Cuban black beans all featuring.
And anyone with room to spare after the mains are cleared away will enjoy browsing a petite but tempting dessert menu. Along with a delicious chocolate mousse and the Cuban favourite creme caramel, you’ll find a choice of exotically flavoured ice creams including basil, cumin, cinnamon and ginger.
Reservations are required at La Cocina de Lilliam and its glowing reputation means tables get booked up fast. But make a point of dining here and you’ll be rewarded by a restaurant offering a level of culinary flair you won’t easily find elsewhere.
