One of the truly appealing things about Paladar Estella is the picturesque garden tucked away at the rear of the restaurant. Adorned with a beautiful array of exotic trees and flowering plants, this private space offers a quiet and relaxing retreat. It’s hard to imagine a more enjoyable location to settle back and enjoy a long, lazy evening beneath the stars.
Having once been a creaking colonial family home, Paladar Estella’s conversion into a restaurant hasn’t taken away anything away from the character of the property. The original antique furniture has been left in place and every effort has been made to carefully preserve its period features.
While this unique setting is an undoubted attraction, the main reason to come is unquestionably for the food. Although the menu features a relatively small selection of dishes, each one is cooked to perfection. Meat lovers will undoubtedly savour Paladar Estella‘s succulently cooked lamb dish served with a side portion of fluffy white rice and a generous salad of fresh tomatoes, cucumber and ripe avocado – sourced from the tree in the restaurant’s garden. Also popular is cerdo asado a la criolla (pulled pork) which is the restaurant’s house speciality.
If you decide to opt for one of these dishes make sure you bring a healthy appetite – the portion sizes are known for being on the large size. But if you do have some room to spare after the main course, you’ll find yourself with a number of enticing options for dessert. These include a heavenly flan de leche (crème caramel) and refreshing homemade ice cream including pineapple and coconut.
It’s also possible to book accommodation at Paladar Estella, but options are pretty limited – there’s just one room. If you do wish to book yourself a bed for the night the rate is $20 for a double, and as the only guest you’re guaranteed to be well looked after.
Paladar Estella is a special kind of restaurant. With a warm and inviting atmosphere, good old fashioned family hospitality and superb local food, it’s established a reputation as one of the best places to eat out in this historic neighbourhood.
