Waco's Club Paladar
Restaurant owner and chef Roberto Ojeda Herrera is clearly a proud son. Not only is the restaurant named after his father but so is the menu’s signature dish. His father, nicknamed ‘Waco’, competed in three Olympic Games as helmsman in the Cuban rowing team, distinguishing himself in 1992 when he helped the Cuban team achieve their highest position for over 80 years.
As you come across Waco’s Club for the first time, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d taken a wrong turn. It looks more like a stylish residential property than a local restaurant, with the main entrance to the dining room actually situated at the rear of the property. But once you’ve navigated your way inside, you’ll discover an intimate and atmospheric dining room that feels home from home.
The extensive choice of main meals available includes grilled fish, roasted rabbit, shrimp flambéed in rum and a beautifully tender fillet mignon in a mushroom sauce. Beyond these main menu choices are the popular ‘Chef’s Suggestions.’ These include a number of delicious lobster dishes, the most notable being ‘Waco´s Club Lobster’. This house speciality is served with mushrooms in a creamy sauce and plenty of gorgeously melted cheese.
Also highly recommended is ‘Barbecue of the House’ - a hearty meal for 2 that includes lobster tail, a whole fish, shrimps, half a chicken and a pork steak, complete with rice. In addition to that feast of food, two cocktails are included with this lavish platter.
The drinks menu itself features fruit juices and soft drinks along with domestic and imported beers. There’s also an extensive coffee menu that includes cortados, cappuccino and a popular rum-based nightcap - Café Carajillo.
Chef Roberto takes genuine pride in his food, and it shows. The quality and freshness of the food is outstanding and the prices extremely reasonable. If you fancy dining out under the stars, there’s also a secluded upstairs terrace where you can enjoy the evening air and soothing background music.
If you’re looking to experience a welcoming atmosphere and some of the best food in all of Varadero, ‘Waco’s Club’ should be placed right near the top of your list.
