La Divina Pastora Restaurant

Situated within the Parque Historico Militar Morro-Cabaña on the far side of Havana Harbour sits La Divina Pastora, which has recently become one of the most well-regarded restaurants anywhere in Cuba. Its view from behind a rampart of 18th-century cannons is its claim to fame, but its cuisine—which has improved drastically since the arrival of a new chef —is also part of its renown. This elegant, romantic restaurant is without a doubt one of the best places to eat in Havana.

Across the harbour from Old Havana sits one of the city’s—and Cuba’s—top historic sites for visitors. This is the Parque Histórico Militar Morro-Cabaña (Morro-Cabaña Military Historic Park), home to the two iconic forts that are its namesake. Slightly lesser known, however, is the fact that there’s more to see and do here than just the forts—and chief among these attractions is the restaurant La Divina Pastora.
One could make the case that La Divina Pastora is home to the best view of any restaurant in Cuba—and it’s a strong argument. Directly across Havana Harbour from Old Havana, it’s the view back towards this famed section of the city that is most iconic. Especially as the sun sets each evening and the buildings across the harbour begin twinkling in the twilight, it’s a magical site without comparison elsewhere on the island.

The Offerings

In a prior incarnation, La Divina Pastora was noted for its fabulous setting but sometimes lacklustre food. Be sure that this is no longer the case! Reopened after renovations and under new ownership in late 2010, the restaurant is now widely recognized for its fine Cuban cuisine with a progressive international flair.

Seafood is the big draw here—the lobster and the surf and turf are two perennial favourites—but frankly everything on the menu is quite good. The service is noted as some of the best on the island, and the wine list is exceptional as well. If you’re hoping for an upscale night out in Havana, perhaps to celebrate a special occasion, this might be the place you’ve been looking for.

The ideal stopover during a sightseeing tour around El Morro y La Cabana Forts
Situated alongside the 16th century “El Morro” and the 18th century “La Cabaña,” two of the Caribbean’s most historic fortifications, the restaurant is also impressive in its more immediate surroundings. La Cabaña is home to one of Havana’s most iconic daily occurrences, called the Ceremonia del Cañonazo de las Nueve (Ceremony of the Nine O'clock Cannon Shooting). At 9 PM every evening, an intricate ceremony ends with the firing of a symbolic cannon shot to which many residents of Havana still set their clocks. If you’re visiting the fort to take part in the ceremony, a dinner at La Divina Pastora can be a great way to complement the evening. It's also a great place for having a few sun-downers while strolling through these forts.
Between the food, the service, the location, and the truly incredible view, it’s tough to top La Divina Pastora. As the sun sets over Old Havana and you savour the taste of a fine glass of wine, there’s no doubt you’ll be happy that you decided to cross that harbour.
