Cafe Jazz Miramar

Old school jazz aficionados might turn their noses up at the cigar-free, modern ambiance of Cafe Miramar, but fans of Afro-Cuban jazz styles will appreciate the fabulous acoustics, reasonable menu and well-considered layout of this new venue on Havana's live music scene. For tourist is a great opportunity to enjoy amazing concerts by Cuban music performances.

There is no shortage of venues to listen to Cuba's talented musicians in Havana, with the repertoire ranging from Afro-Cuban folkloric beats to salsa, son and jazz - and everything in between; but for sure this is one of the most special venues to enjoy Cuban jazz. Café Miramar is a relatively new club in the Miramar neighbourhood that’s rapidly making a name for itself.

A great venue for live music in Miramar

Café Miramar is quickly gaining a reputation for being one of the best venues to listen to some of Cuba’s best musicians jamming. Old hands on the jazz scene beware: don't come here looking for somewhere to puff on Cuba's famous cigars. This venue has shaken off the image of the dark, smoky jazz bar - it is clean, modern and open.

Unlike many Havana venues, where the talent of the musicians is obscured by an out-of-date sound system, the acoustics at Café Jazz Miramar are excellent. Furthermore, the stage is in the centre of the room, meaning everyone can get a view. The likes of internationally-known Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca - who has recently been exploring his African roots in collaboration with Malian singer, Fatoumata Diawara - have played here. Aficionados of Cuban music will recognise other names from the billing such as Harold and Ernán López-Nussa and Roberto Carcassés.

Make a night of it

A limited but tasty menu is available alongside a decent wine list with reasonable prices. The music normally gets going around 10pm, so book a table for dinner and make an evening of it. It seems that this new venue is eager to please and the service frequently gets good reviews.

Miramar location

Not to be confused with the Jazz Café in Vedado, Café Miramar is on 5th Avenue and 94th Street, in Miramar district. It's near the Hotel Occidental Miramar, in the former 'Cine Teatro Miramar' building. It is run by government arts centre agency Artex and admission is $5 CUC.

Like the syncopated beats, the schedule seems to be a little improvised, but you are guaranteed a night of great music at the Café Miramar. Posters and flyers at the venue demonstrate a variety of artists and styles. If you are lucky, you might chance upon a world music star for the fraction of the ticket price of a gig back home, or on some authentic examples of clave-infused Afro-Cuban jazz, as developed in the Latin communities of 1940s New York and re-imported to Cuba.
