Bistro Habana-Kohly

The Bistro Habana-Kohly is appropriately located in the Kohly neighbourhood of Havana's upscale Miramar municipality, and though the food isn't strictly French, the restaurant maintains the feel of a small and cosy Parisian cafe-eatery. Popular for both its outdoor dining terrace and its intimate, air-conditioned indoor dining room, the Bistro Habana-Kohly serves up fine international cuisine with French and Cuban touches for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Without a doubt, this is a top restaurant in Havana, Cuba.

Though it’s not a particularly popular nickname, Havana is occasionally called “the Paris of the Americas”. Though the two cities are drastically different in several ways, there are also plenty of Havana locations and experiences where the moniker begins to make some sense. Chief among these might be enjoying a glass of wine or a cup of coffee at the Bistró Habana-Kohly. Or perhaps come for their excellently priced breakfast selection accompanied by a selection of natural juices.

The Atmosphere

The Bistró Habana-Kohly is located on a quiet street in the Kohly neighbourhood of Havana’s Miramar district. In fact, it’s just a few blocks away from Río Almendares, the dividing line between Vedado and Miramar.

Kohly developed during the mid-20th century as a neighbourhood for Havana’s growing upper class, and the Bistró Habana-Kohly is found in a refurbished midsize mansion from this period.

The Bistró Habana-Kohly features two main dining areas. The first is an outdoor terrace, cleverly constructed to provide a view overlooking the street below yet built in a way that also offers sheltered privacy. The outdoor space is surrounded by warm, red-brick walls and even features fountains with live turtles happily splashing around in them.

The second option is an indoor dining room, air-conditioned for those scorching Havana afternoons when you just have to get out of the sun. The place is decorated immaculately—abstract art lines the beige-coloured walls and the elegantly lit bar area is truly a sight to see.

The Food and Drink

The Bistró Habana-Kohly opens promptly at 7 o’clock each morning and begins serving breakfast from then until 12 noon. During this period you’ll find a small but diverse menu of breakfast treats including some fine baguette sandwiches and of course delicious, freshly-brewed Cuban coffee for you to enjoy.

However, it’s when lunch and dinner roll around that the Bistró Habana-Kohly really starts to shine. It’s nearly impossible to encapsulate the expansive and adventurous menu with just a few examples, but here they are regardless—smoked pork loin, curried chicken, sautéed squid in cream of celery sauce, and the grilled pork “Aloha” featuring Hawaiian flairs.

Finally, the drink menu at the Bistró Habana-Kohly is as impressive as the food being served—it spans national and international beers and soft drinks, local coffee, freshly prepared fruit juices, and some of the best house-made cocktails anywhere in the city.

When you’re ready to escape the hustle and bustle of Old Havana and enjoy a taste of the city as the French would have wanted it, the Bistró Habana-Kohly is exactly what you’re looking for. Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the atmosphere and the food here are simply not to be missed.
