Flamenco Night in Havana
Spanish dance, music and food are an inherent part of Cuban life and this excursion combines all three in an evening of vibrant festivity!
Flamenco is a traditional form of folk music and dance from Spain. Introduced to Cuba during the colonisation period, it consists of a dance style renowned for its emotional intensity, the proud, upright stature of the participants, expressive use of the dancer's arms and accented stamping of the feet. This footwork is performed with absolute precision. The accompanying music exhibits a rhythmic pattern, punctuated by hand-clapping, musicians tapping table tops with their knuckles, intense guitar strumming and rapping of the guitar soundboard.
Our fabulous Flamenco night takes place in Havana's "El Meson de la Flota", a venue that is a short distance from the historical Old Square and close to the bay. The restaurant is in the style of a Spanish tavern, the interior of tiled floors and carved wooden fence windows contributing to the atmosphere. Reflecting Havana's seafaring past, there is a distinctly maritime feel to the decor - you'll see ships in bottles, scale model replicas of old vessels and draping flags. It's easy to imagine 18th and 19th century seafarers seeking entertainment, respite and refreshment here.
And you'll have the opportunity to do the same! The tapas menu at "El Meson de la Flota" offers an extensive choice of mouth-watering food. With dishes such as Tortilla de Patata (potato omelette) you'll enjoy a traditional Spanish feast. Maybe in homage to Havana's coastal location you'll opt for Gambas al Ajillo (prawns sauteed in garlic)? The menu, using the best ingredients and prepared using traditional techniques, really contributes to the authenticity of the evening. As part of the excursion you can also enjoy two cocktails, helping you really get into the spirit of the evening - Salud!
