Exclusive Vinales Tour from Havana
Escape the hustle and bustle of the city on this relaxing daytrip through the beautiful Vinales Valley.
When the surrounding countryside is as impressive as this, it is certainly worth taking a break from Havana and exploring the rustic ambience of the Vinales Valley. Easily reached from Havana, it was granted status as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. The area is predominantly agricultural, with farmers cultivating crops of fruit, vegetables, coffee and tobacco using traditional techniques.
A tour through a cigar factory (Fabrica de Tabacos Francisco) provides a fascinating insight into how this region's tobacco is made into cigars. As the area boasts the finest cigar tobacco in the world, observe the skillful work of cigar rollers, with an expert guide describing what you are seeing at every stage in the process. The factory is housed in an antique prison that was converted in the 1960's. There is a shop where you can purchase some of the cigars you've seen made and other souvenirs.
A stop at the Mural of Prehistory offers an interesting interlude. Commissioned by Fidel Castro in 1961, it is one of the world's biggest outdoor paintings. Depicting the biological evolution of the landscape it is a modern rock painting of staggering proportions that strongly divides opinion. We'd recommend taking a look at the images of dinosaurs, cave people and snails and deciding for yourself!
After perusing the mural, enjoy a traditional Cuban lunch at "Las Magnolias", a nearby restaurant.
Suitably refreshed, the following part of this excursion is a tour by motor boat through the Indian Caves (Cuevas del Indio). Sit back and relax as you are transported on water through magnificent underground limestone formations adorned with stalagmites and stalactites. Atmospherically lit, this is of interest to those who value natural scenery.
