Guama: Steam and Sugar
This full-day trip highlights the Cuban countryside and history, as you visit places from a crocodile farm to a Taino Indian village
Prepare for a busy, varied and fascinating day as you head out of Varadero through the horses, carts and bikes of bustling Cardenas. You'll travel in a comfortable air-conditioned bus through attractive landscapes of red soil and sugar cane fields.
Once you've reached Guama you will then be able to admire some of the finest native Cuban wildlife, including the Cuban crocodiles of the Zaptata Peninsula. Here you can enjoy the famous crocodile sanctuary.
Next there's the chance to travel across mangrove-lined waters to La Laguna del Tesoro (Treasure Lake). Here you'll take a guided tour of a reconstructed village of the Tainos, the indigenous people of Cuba and the first inhabitants before the Spanish conquerors arrived and wiped them out. Expect to see palm leaf roofed huts, statues and boardwalks, as well as some exotic birdlife.
After a great lunch, which will be provided as part of the experience and is included in the price of the trip, you will be visiting the famous historical landmark at Playa Giron. It was here that Castro made his headquarters when the Americans invaded the Bay of Pigs (Bahia de Cochinos) during a key moment in Cuban history back in 1961.
Finally, the trip will call in at a steam train museum and you will take a brief steam train ride into the fields, still ploughed the traditional way, with yoked oxen.
This day trip offers much to take in, and it's a wonderful chance to absorb Cuban wildlife, bird life and history close-up, as well as learning a lot about this fascinating island's rich past and biodiversity in a short space of time.
