A Full Night of Jazz and Tradition
Dive into the heart of Cuba's heritage and vibrant jazz tradition. Enjoy the 200 year-old Cannon Shot Ceremony and a host of jazz delights
A historic boom
The Cannon Shot Ceremony forms the first stage of this tour. It is a ritual that has held locals spellbound for the past 200 years. A group of young boys doing military service transform themselves into 19th century Spanish soldiers by donning full costumes of the times down to the white wigs. The ceremony itself begins at 9 p.m. sharp, without fail (hence why they locally call it the "canonazo de las nueve" - the nine o'clock cannon shot) and it's celebrated at the vast La Cabana fortress. The nightly shooting of the cannon dates back to olden days of anxious locals trying to protect their city during the reign of Spanish King Carlos III. The firing of the cannon heralded the closing of the city doors, a ceremony as popular now as in bygone days. This colonial ceremony is revived every evening in the Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabana (often shortened to La Cabana), the third largest fort in Americas. From here you will have the opportunity of admiring the beauty of Old Havana and part of the Havana skyline at night.
Cocktails and Cuban Cuisine
Next you will head to the one and only La Bodeguita del Medio, where the world-famous Mojito was born. Drink and dine to your heart's content as the welcome cocktail leads into a splendid traditional Cuban dinner. The renowned local chef will provide a truly memorable meal, giving you a fabulous taste of first-class Cuban cuisine.
Music and all that jazz
The best is saved for last as you reach the climax of your evening at the world-famous Cuban jazz lounge La Zorra y El Cuervo. Stars such as legendary Grammy-winning Bebo Valdes and his son Chucho Valdes, George Benson and Gonzalo Rubalcaba have graced this stage. Jazz lives here, it has a permanent home in this club joint and it also resides in the Cuban spirit, where there is a real passion for this delectable musical style. The brightest and best performers will be here to entertain your every jazz wish in this cool basement den which can accommodate around 130 jazz fans. This is where your tour ends and no doubt the best way to finish off a cultural evening of assorted delights -historic and contemporary.
