Entering the Ambos Mundos is like stepping back in time, as you’re transported back to the heady days of the 1920s. The hotel retains a charming atmosphere, and the location is perfect for exploring the sights, sounds and smells of Old Havana.

  • Experience life in the lobby bar The lobby houses wonderful art exhibits and features a piano bar, where jazz and other musicians perform. It attracts many visitors for its atmosphere and Cuban charm.
  • Famous hotel room 511, in Old Havana This hotel is where Ernest Hemmingway stayed and wrote the first chapters of 'For whom the Bell tolls'. Built in the late 1920s the Ambos Mundos is in the heart of Old Havana, close to all the city's attractions.
  • Lovely colonial building with wonderful Rooftop terrace Guests can enjoy every aspect of this historic hotel, as did Ernest Hemmingway and so many other creative guests of the past. The rooftop garden terrace is a wonderful space to relax with a mojito and enjoy the views of the city and the buzz of the streets below.

Room 511 is famed as being where Ernest Hemingway lived for a period of time and wrote the first chapter of For Whom the Bell Tolls, and the room acts as a mini museum with some of his belongings on display, including his rather extensive bar tab. You can also sample some of his favourite meals in the Plaza de Armas restaurant.

The hotel boasts a delightful roof terrace where you can partake of a meal or a cocktail, accompanied by live music. Of course, you are met with a stunning view over the rooftops and squares of Havana. To get there, you’ll ride in an old-style elevator complete with bellhop.

Music is a key part of the Ambos Mundos’s attraction; when you step in off the street, you at first find yourself in a piano bar, with relaxing seating in soothing colours. Time seems to slow down to when things moved at a more sedate pace.

Naturally, there’s plenty of opportunity to get involved in the colourful street life of Old Havana as the hotel is located on the Obispo Street, near close to many bars, many of which offer still more live music, in particular the seductive sounds of the rumbason, boleros, cha cha cha and salsa.

The nearby Plaza de Armas gives you a real taste of history as well as the chance to relax away from the sweltering heat in its well-shaded gardens. Buildings to be found around the square include the City Museum, a Baroque masterpiece that was formerly the home of the city’s generals, and the magnificent Castillo de la Real Fuerza, a fort dating from the mid-16th century.

After a hard day’s sightseeing, you’re guaranteed a warm welcome back at the hotel, which is renowned for its friendly service. What better way to round off a day in Havana than to watch the sun go down while sipping a glass of rioja Rioja on the roof terrace?
