The San Miguel hotel has the look of a European stately home, sitting proudly on Cuba Street in Old Havana. The inside of this beautiful building is equally as elegant, with wrought iron banisters lining the grand staircase. Photographs of the hotel, its surrounding area and the San Miguel y Segala family (its original owners) adorn the walls and give a sense of the history of the place.

The building was once owned and lived in by the art-loving publisher of the La Lucha newspaper, and there are photographs on the walls of Havana at the turn of the 20th century which can make guests here feel in a Cuban time warp. The style of the hotel is very much in line with that of the Bourgeoisie Cuban middle class of that time, which gives a sense of grandness and high society. It is almost impossible not to imagine a cocktail reception in the dining room, with Cuba’s movers and shakers gathering to discuss ideas and celebrate the host.

The San Miguel is spitting distance from Havana Bay and offers fantastic views from the rooms’s balconies; of the sea and looking out to the Castillo del Morro and La Cabana fortress, both of which are well worth a visit. The Plaza Vieja, or Old Square, is fantastic for sitting with a coffee or mojito and watching the world go by. From here, the Malecon esplanade runs eight kilometres along the sea wall to the Almendares River and is a great spot to sit and watch the sun go down, with the dilapidated houses behind creating a sense of forgotten romance.

With ten comfortable rooms styled in what would have been this mansion’s original colonial design but with modern fittings and fixtures as well as convenient essentials of the present day; at the San Miguel hotel you will feel in character from the moment you step into the lobby to the minute you turn off the lights and sink into the comfy bed. A bar, restaurant and parking complete the list of facilities with the quaint, homely size of this boutique hotel making it a warm and comfortable home-from-home hideaway. This hotel feels like part of the history of the city itself, so is a great base to really get to know and explore Old Havana from.
