Looking distinctly like an old Spanish taverna from the outside, with its wooden carved shutters and large wooden barrels, the Meson de la Flota literally means "The Tavern of the Fleet". This is a nod to a time when Havana was only reached by boat and huge ships would sail in carrying all sorts of cargo, and leave taking sugar and other exports. With the hotel being a few blocks from the harbour, it's easy to envisage those sailors from centuries ago, sitting at the tables in Meson de la Flota, enjoying rum and sharing tales of the sea. Today, much of Old Havana's rich culture and history is preserved in the museums, galleries and architecture. This area is defined by the old city walls and the Old Town even has a UNESCO World Heritage Listing. With the Meson de la Flota being located just moments from the Old Square, this makes it the ideal location from which to explore this historical area. The Old Square was actually originally called Plaza Nueva, or New Square, when it emerged as a public open space in 1559. Since then it has been a location for processions, celebrations, bullfights, markets and even executions. There are buildings and styles here from the 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and even 20th centuries. Old Havana is a rich and vibrant melting pot, taking influences from Europe, Africa and the United States. This influence is seen in the cuisine, architecture, music and even cars, with many 1950s American cars still on the streets. Architecture fans can find examples of Baroque, Art Deco and Neo-Classical styles, while wandering through the cobbled streets. One of the best things to do in Old Havana is simply to walk, looking up at the buildings and features. The Meson de la Flota is the ideal base for a trip to Havana. The rooms are spacious and well-decorated, with high ceilings and good bathrooms. With only five rooms, the service is personal, and guests can enjoy intimate tapas meals in the restaurant. There is even traditional Flamenco dancing, complete with live music, several evenings a week.
