The famous Hotel Riviera in the Vedado district of Havana still oozes the style and glamour of the 1950s era in which it was built. The large, open, marble-floored lobby, Art Deco decor, 50s style furnishings and original features call to mind the starlets and mobsters of the time, socialising in cocktail dresses and tuxedos. This hotel truly is like a 1950s museum and has the history to match. Originally commissioned by one of the mafia in 1957, this seafront hotel was originally intended to mirror the style and luxury of the hotels on the Las Vegas strip. The building, with its many windows and balconies, grand Riviera sign, sculptures by prominent Cuban artists, and impressive outdoor pool goes someway to fulfilling that intention. An icon of the 1950s, Ginger Rogers herself came to open the hotel in December 1957, with a performance in the Copa Room nightclub, which is still open today. In the 1950s, the Riviera Havana was the place to be seen, ideal for celebrations and honeymoons. Today, the hotel boasts a number of facilities, including a large pool, poolside bar and cafe, stylish restaurant, beauty salon offering massage treatments, sauna and fitness centre. The service is good, also, with a porter and bellman, and entertainers offering cabaret in the evening. There is a large number of rooms, along with some suites. Due to the high rise design of the building, most rooms have sea views, looking out across the famous Malecon sea road. The Malecon is worth a walk. This stretch of road runs from 8km along the coast from the mouth of the Almendares River, upon which the Riviera Havana sits. When the weather is right, the waves crash against the sea wall creating a spray that covers the whole street. The Malecon is where Cubans gather of an evening to socialise and plan the night's activities. Lovers stroll hand in hand, while groups of friends sit on the sea walls, chatting as the sun goes down. Old Havana, the Miramar district and the Vedado district, in which the hotel sits, are also all worth a visit.
