Barbara Lee talks about end Cuba travel and trade embargo and U.S ambassador role

The United States will be opening its embassy in Cuba later this month and Rep. Barbara Lee is rumoured to be the frontrunner to become the U.S Ambassador to Cuba. In a recent interview with Democracy Now, Barbara talks about her campaign to change the U.S relationship with the Caribbean island nation.

After the recent announcement that U.S and Cuban embassies would open in Washington in Havana later this month, the next stage is selecting a U.S Ambassador to Cuba.

Barbara Lee is the frontrunner for the position after visiting Cuba more than 20 times since the 1970s and co-sponsoring the Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act and the Free Trade with Cuba Act.

In a recent interview, Democracy Now speaks to Barbara Lee about her past campaign efforts and if the rumours are true about running for U.S Ambassador. Congresswoman Lee explained:

"Being an ambassador to Cuba is, I think, a great position, if you're about ready to retire from Congress. I'm not about ready to retire from Congress. I want to continue to work to lift this embargo and to ensure that the travel ban is lifted. I want to continue representing the greatest district in the country."

When asked about the legislation that needs to happen with the president's diplomatic initiatives on Cuba, Barbara answered:

"Now, you know, you have to have a license. It's a general license, that really, though, is specific in terms of who can travel to Cuba. But under this administration, they have really made it a little broader and much more flexible in terms of travelling. But you cannot go to Cuba as a tourist. And so, we have legislation that would allow just normal travel relations, like we can travel to China, to Vietnam. Americans have the right to travel to Cuba."

Lee also added:

"I hope the people listening to this interview would call their members of Congress and tell them to-tell their members to sign on as co-sponsors, and let's get these bills passed so that we can have just normal trade and diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba. It's to the benefit of the Cuban people and the American people."

Obama made an announcement last December that the two countries would begin resuming relations and leaders have spent the last few months negotiating the re-establishment of embassies.

In 1961, the United States cut off diplomatic relations with Cuba following Fidel Castro's revolution. The years that followed saw an economic embargo imposed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

General tourism and sun holidays to Cuba continue to be restricted, but U.S travellers can travel to the Caribbean island through people to people programmes and trips under 12 categories and organised by tour operators and charter companies in the U.S.

Cuba is an island nation located east of Mexico and south of the United States. The communist country is rich in political history and it is home to some of the world's most magnificent natural landscapes such as pristine white sand beaches, turquoise lagoons, and the world's second largest barrier reef.
