New consortium launched to lobby for U.S. - Cuba normalisation

The Howard Baker Forum has launched the Cuba Consortium to lobby for U.S.-Cuba normalisation. The group will feature members made up of individuals, companies, investors, and entrepreneurs who are interested in engaging with Cuba and will feature regional roundtables that focus on sectors including tourism and hospitality, arts, agriculture, IT, healthcare and infrastructure for Americans who are looking to do business in Cuba.

New consortium launched to lobby for U.S. - Cuba normalisation

A new member-based group has been launched for individuals and companies who are interested in U.S.-Cuba normalisation, following the recent changes to diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Just a few days ago The Cuba Consortium has been launched by the Howard Baker Forum and will be led by an Advisory Board that will be co-chaired by Nancy Kassebaum and Tom Daschle.

The group will feature members made up of investors, entrepreneurs, non-profit organisations and companies, and it will provide them with information to help them with opportunities to engage with Cuba in the future.

Senator Kassebaum explained:

"Business leaders around the country are interested in the prospect of engaging with Cuba, but need to know more. The normalisation process may be contentious, but The Cuba Consortium can bring diverse parties to the table, provide the latest information and analysis, and work toward a sound consensus. This is exactly the role my husband envisioned when he founded The Howard Baker Forum."

The Cuba Consortium's first partners meeting will take place in Washington, D.C. in the United States this autumn, and its first annual Washington conference is planned for early 2016. There will be regional roundtable events that will focus on sectors such as tourism and hospitality, arts, agriculture, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, and infrastructure, as well as workshops that will help Americans who are interested in investing and doing business in Cuba.

Scott Campbell, the president of the Howard Baker Forum, commented:

"The Howard Baker Forum is establishing The Cuba Consortium to inform its members as the process of normalisation unfolds. Our vision for The Cuba Consortium is that it will provide a platform for objective analysis of the concerns and demands of both governments and a thoughtful evaluation of the pathways to normalisation through reform, commerce, and investment."

U.S President Barack Obama recently announced that Cuba and the United States would resume diplomatic relations following five decades of hostilities, and travel restrictions to Cuba have been eased but not yet removed for American travellers.

General tourism and sun holidays to Cuba are still restricted but U.S travellers can travel to the island through people to people programmes and trips in 12 categories organised by tour operators and charter companies in the U.S.

Last week, the two countries opened embassies in Washington in the United States and Havana in Cuba.
