Princess Caroline of Hanover in Cuba with the Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo

Posted: 30-Oct-15 10:07

Accompanying the debut of The Monte-Carlo Ballet in Cuba, Princess Caroline of Monaco is now in the island as her country's official national ballet company participates as one of the invited guests in the 16th Festival de Teatro de La Habana (Havana Theatre Festival). Her ballet company will be debuting tonight at the Sala Avellaneda in Havana's Teatro Nacional tonight with their own twisted version of Cinderella.

The eldest daughter of the former Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly is in Havana to mark the debut of her country’s national ballet company which she herself founded following the wishes of her deceased mother.

Princess Caroline of Hanover, otherwise known as Caroline Grimaldi will be seating front row at the Sala Avellaneda in the Cuban capital’s legendary Teatro Nacional to watch the performance of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo as they perform in Cuba for the first time ever.

Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo

Presenting their own production inspired in the classic fairy tale of Cinderella but with a different, more modern twist, The Monte-Carlo Ballet will be performing at Havana’s Teatro Nacional on three different occasions over the next few days, the first of which takes place tonight.

Jean-Christophe Maillot

According to local sources, the ballet company’s director, French choreographer and ex-ballet dancer, Jean-Christophe Maillot said:

"...being in Cuba is a dream come true"

He further went on to explain how the production his company will be presenting in Cuba was inspired in the Grimm brother’s traditional version but with a “contemporary and austere” scenography that will guide the audience through this famous fairy tale without losing the element of surprise, but done in a “simple and symbolic” way.

Anjara Ballesteros

The two main characters in the story, Cinderella and the prince, will be played by Spanish dancers, Anjara Ballesteros and Alvaro Prieto, both disciples of Nacho Duato.

This marks the first ever visit to Cuba made by the first daughter of Prince Rainiero III and American beauty, Grace Kelly, although her brother, Prince Albert II travelled to Havana in 1989.

Alvaro Prieto - Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo

Beyond the programmed performances, The Monte-Carlo Ballet (mostly referred to in its original French name – Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo) and its director, Maillot held meetings with teachers and dancers from Cuba’s national ballet company, Ballet Nacional de Cuba.

Maillot later declared that such a reunion allowed him to get to know Cuba’s prestigious ballet school first hand and get a personal insight into the island’s long-held ballet dancing traditions. He spoke of it as a ballet school saying:

“... highly appraised and renowned in the world.”

He also went on to add he would be interested in welcoming Cuban ballet dancers into his own school.

With this visit, the Princes of Hanover, Caroline Grimaldi becomes the latest of celebrities to come to the island, which has seen a flurry of A-List visitors taking Havana by storm since the announcement of the re-establishment of diplomatic ties between Cuba and the U.S.
