The annual Cuban Night held each year in November to mark the start of the World Travel Market - the leading global event in the travel industry - was celebrated yesterday evening at the Boisdale of Canary Wharf and attended by the Cuba holidays team. Among fellow Cuban folk from the travel industry, an invited Cuban band giving an outstanding live performance and some deliciously authentic Cuban food, the evening proved a networking success to strengthen ties with partners and a resonating entertainment triumph everyone enjoyed!

Cuba Holidays team attends Cuban party to celebrate London's WTM 2015

Like every November, the Cuba Tourist Board in conjunction with the Cuban Embassy in London and the special Cuban delegation attending the World Travel Market, hosted a very special evening to mark the start of one of the biggest events in the global travel industry – WTM 2015.

Held at the Boisdale of Canary Wharf for the first time, this year’s Cuban party changed location from the usual venue of Floridita in London’s Soho (inspired on the legendary El Floridita bar and restaurant in Havana: the famous cradle of the daiquiri) which is currently closed due to the damage caused by an unfortunate fire incident.

Cuba Holidays was there to celebrate every success in Cuba’s rapidly growing tourism industry as well as to engage with long-established partners, forge new relationships with key players in the industry and catch up with the latest developments on Cuba's tourism sector.

Cuban Night 2015 at the Boisdale of Canary Wharf officially kicked off at 7 p.m. with an initial serving of delectable canapes and light bites that included some classic Cuban favourites like sweet potato chips and malanga fritters. As abundant trays filled to the brim with tasty bite-sized food surfed through the waves of guests, mojitos, Cuba Libres and daiquiris were on free-flow in a very similar fashion. Numerous attentive waiters swiftly moved through the crowds and were on hand to top up your drink or offer you something different once they noticed your glass was nearly empty – now that’s what you call service!

Adding to the authentic Cuban atmosphere was a background of recorded Cuban classics and later on Cuban live music as a band took to the stage.

But prior to this, a formal welcoming introduction to the evening and what was to come was in order as Director of the Cuba Tourist Board in the UK, Miguel Chang proceeded to give a speech in which he thanked everyone for coming and congratulated all business partners for their mutual achievements in promoting Cuba and effectively marketing the Caribbean destination to the UK holiday market.

Following this formality, Cuban Ambassador to the UK, Teresita Vicente gave another brief speech in which she also personally thanked everyone involved in the UK holiday industry who had worked so hard in pushing Cuba forward and making it a more visible and desirable destination to UK travellers. She also took the opportunity to personally thank the owner of Boisdale for offering his venue to host this year’s Cuban party.

"We welcome all of you to Cuba, as a matter of fact I know many of you have visited Cuba several times."

"Thank you very much Mr McDonald, I think the Cuban Night this year is prestiged by your presence, kindness and restaurant."

To put a finishing touch to the evening’s greetings the man in charge of the delegation representing Cuba at WTM this year, Jose Manuel Bisbe was the last to address the audience and said:

"Cuba is having a very good tourism year, we’re having very good results.

"We want to say a big thank you to tour operators, press, airlines (in the UK)… all those that in one way or another are helping to develop the Cuban tourism business."

We will dance, we will enjoy the Cuban food, we will enjoy Cuban music, we will talk to our friends and have a very unforgettable evening and night here at the start of the World Travel Market. Thank you for being here with us tonight and enjoy your night!"

After this everyone proceeded to the buffet table in order to help themselves to some hearty and tasty Cuban fare that included the traditional staple moros y cristianos (black beans and white rice), congrí (red beans cooked with rice), pulled pork, pieces of chicken breast, tostones (thickly cut plaintain fritters) and some spicy quesadillas on the side.

At the same time the band took the stage and helped everyone digest their food with a spot of singing and dancing. Thank you Cuba Tourist Board for a highly enjoyable evening that takes everyone back to Cuba and puts everyone in that uplifting Cuban spirit and thanks for bringing a piece of Cuba to London for yet another year in which we celebrate some well-deserved mutural success. Here’s to many more to come – cheers! Or should I say, salud!
