A new project for a fiction film that will start being filmed in Havana towards the end of 2016 is getting Harley drivers all over Cuba (and the world) excited as for the first time ever, Cuba's vintage beauties will be exposed and showcased like never before. The movie which was presented during the recently held 37th edition of the Havana Film Festival, will be taken to the big screen with the title 'Havana Riders' with a tale that aims to captivate speed fans and vintage bike collectors alike.

Soon-to-come: new film "Habana Riders" gets Harley fans excited

During the latest edition of the Havana Film Festival, which took place in Havana less than two weeks ago, a project for a new film to be shot in Cuba was presented which left a great deal of expectation among local cinema-goers and Harley-Davidson fans alike.

A co-production between Argentina, Venezuela, Spain and Cuba, its producers expect to create an engaging fiction film that captures the audience beyond the vintage appeal of Cuba as a whole, but more particulary the old motorbikes that will feature prominently in it.

As its Venezuelan producer, Gabriela Fuentes explains;

"The biggest challenge in this film will be to overcome its nostalgic postcard appeal to sink deeper into a credible human story."

The plot goes that a young Cuban peasant finds (totally by chance) a vintage Harley Davidson that once belonged to Elvis Presley, and from then on, his life takes an unexpected turn and changes forever. From that moment on, this young Cuban’s life is transformed forever as he goes through adventures that edge between extremely tense and euphoric moments.

As the story gains momentum, the finding of said bike ultimately leads to the organising of a big race from Santiago de Cuba to Havana, gathering Harley owners from all over the world who come to Cuba to battle it out for the coveted first prize.

During a press conference introducing this new film project, producers also revealed their intentions to include actors from different nationalities in the film. Gabriela Fuentes, also added that another of the film’s main goals (and the reason why the producing team was multi-national) was to:

" (...) show a multi-dimensional look of Cuba, the new challenges and processes that Cuba faces today. We are all united by the affection and concern that this island generates. The idea is to combine these affections and surprised looks we have under the excuse of a race that goes from Havana to Santiago."

Spanish producer, Rafael Alvarez said that the film’s original ideal came from an encounter he had with Cuban director, Ian Padron, who had told him of a “possible Harley Davidson race in Havana” and from then on the idea for the film began taking shape.

Still waiting to find a director to lead the project, the film is in its promotional stages of gathering interest and finding new recruits. This was the idea behind its official presentation on the margin of the Havana Film Festival, “because of what this event represents to this island and emerging film-makers”.

In the meantime the script-writing team has already been assembled and its lead by Cuban writer Senel Paz. The team includes various professionals and graduates from the Escuela de Cine de San Antonio de los Baños, like Puerto Rican, Joaquin Octavio Gonzalez, Peruvian Miguel A. Moulet and Cuban Maikel Rodriguez Ponjuan.

Senel Paz said during the conference that:

"Habana Riders seeks to tell our story not only from our point of view but how life in the island is perceived or questioned from the outside."

There are several motorcycle tours of Cuba and not long ago a new book bringing to light Cuba's selective club of proud Harley-Davidson owners, who called themselves "Harlistas" was published under the name "Cuban Harelys, Mi Amor".

We covered its publication and highlighted the beauty of its photographic value as it included some striking images of Cuba's vintage Harley riders while telling their story through their love of Harleys.
