Habaguanex announces four new hotels in Old Havana to come soon

Habaguanex S.A., the leading hotel chain and tourism group in Old Havana, supported by the Office of the Historian of the City and created with the drive to generate funds in order to restore to glory some of the formerly majestic buildings found in a crumbling state around the old part of the city, has recently revealed a number of new additions to its portfolio. Announcing the debut of four newly restored properties across the city, the old part of Havana will welcome a total of four new hotels in the coming few years.

Habaguanex announces four new hotels in Old Havana to come soon

Being now at various stages of the extensive renovation and restoration works they’re being subjected to; four new hotel properties announced by Habaguanex Hotels are now taking shape on old landmark buildings across the oldest part of a Havana, each with a unique and riveting history that dates back to colonial times.

Once these four new hotels are completed they will add 140 rooms to the increasingly limited capacity in Old Havana, where the pace of growing demand in terms of accommodation has been significantly outdoing supply in recent months, particularly this last year after a larger influx of Americans visiting the island has seriously pushed hotel room availability to its limits.

But it’s not just Americans who are flooding the island in growing numbers, tourist visitors to Cuba in general has increased by 18 per cent this year when compared to 2014 and hotel rooms at rooms at present can’t keep up with demand, even when more "casas particulares" than ever have been set up around the city, taking in an increasing number guests as a desirable alternative form of accommodation.

To remedy this, and in an attempt not to be outdone by the private competition, Habaguanex, which is managed by the Office of the Historian of the City and which specialises in offering boutique accommodation in former mansions and of former historical importance.

Noting that 2015 had marked a very successful years with revenue growth surpassing every previous record with a 119 per cent increase, the managing director of Habaguanex, Luis Enrique Sotolongo, also added that the highest demand in rooms this year was seen by countries like the UK, Germany, France, Italy and the U.S.

Mr Sotolongo announced that the four new hotels to be open between 2016 and 2019 were to be named as follows: Catedral, Marques de Cardenas de Monte Hermoso, Cueto and Real Aduana, all of which will offer superior quality accommodation in the form of exclusive and luxurious boutique properties.

The first of these expected to open the soonest is the Marques de Cardenas y Monte Hermoso, located at number 100 of Calle Oficios, on a street adjacent to the San Francisco de Asis Square and also very close to Habaguanex’s offices of San Cristobal). It will be marketed as a five-star plus boutique property offering a total of 21 guest rooms, including a Colonial Suite and a Presidential Room. Other facilities to be found within it include a lobby bar, an interior courtyard and art galleries. The location itself is one of its biggest selling points as it will put guests at a distance of a short five minutes’ walk to the sea and cruise terminal while offering incredible views over the harbour, Havana Bay and La Fuerza Fortress.

Less details have been disclosed about the other properties. For now all we know about the new Hotel Cueto, for example, is that it’s being built on the grounds of an original 1906 construction that is widely considered as the finest example of Art Nouveau expression in Havana. With undulating lines that are somewhat reminiscent of Antonio Gaudi’s style of Catalan Modernism that he made famous in Barcelona, the building is found on the south-eastern corner of Plaza Vieja, yet another centric location in Old Havana facing yet another iconic square, right at the junction of Muralla and Inquisidor Streets.

Next up, the Real Aduana Hotel, probably the most prominent-looking and eye-catching of all will be housed within the former cruise terminal Sierra Maestra, also directly facing the San Francisco de Asis Square on Oficios Street. It promises luxury and convenience with a strategic location close to the Rum Museum and within walking distance to the Malecon seawall and the other main squares in the historic centre.

Lastly, the Hotel Catedral, located to one of the sides of the impressive Havana Cathedral, will enjoy yet another privileged spot, right on Empedrado Street and mere steps away from the cathedral and all the attractions of the square it faces. Incredible views and a buzzing, extremely photogenic location will no sure turn it into one of the most sought-after places to stay at in the oldest part of Cuba’s intriguing capital.
