Fast and Furious' production team in talks to film eighth movie in Cuba

It's official! The producers from Fast & Furious want to film in Cuba! Sources reveal that Universal Picture is currently in the process of requesting filming permission from both governments (Cuba and the U.S.) to film what would become the eighth sequel in the Fast & Furious saga. If all goes according to plan it looks like we'll have a tropical Fast & Furious with plenty of salsa flavour by April 2017!

Fast and Furious' production team in talks to film eighth movie in Cuba

The popular Universal film franchise “Fast and Furious” could soon be staged where no other major Hollywood production has gone before as it was recently revealed that the studio film is currently in the process of requesting permission to shoot what would become its eighth film in Cuba.

And it’s not just rumours it seems as the filmmakers have already launched themselves in a full research trip to Cuba to look into possible locations for the shooting, although for the most part things are still very much in the exploratory phases.

Regardless, even if they are still scouring the country to find the perfect shooting locations, one things seems to be sure on, and that’s that they definitely want to include Cuba in the next instalment of the Fast and Furious saga, as one spokesman from Universal officially declared:

"Universal Pictures is currently in the process of seeking approval from the United States and Cuban governments to explore shooting a portion of the next instalment of the ‘Fast & Furious’ series in Cuba."

Unusual and exotic backdrops are a staple of the Fast and Furious saga with previous films featuring scenes in cities like Rio de Janeiro or Dubai. But Cuba goes beyond the exotic to land right into the previously forbidden and completely unknown, as prior to Obama’s rapprochement with the Cuban government such a move would have been unthinkable and practically impossible in every way.

Cuba is not only desirable because of its renowned car-loving culture and the amazing preservation of vintage American cars (with races being organised every now and then as was brought to light in Discovery Channel’s documentary series “Cuban Chrome”) but the Latin setting is also massively appealing to the film’s producers because of the franchise’s strong following among the Hispanic audience.

The exciting move comes as many big Hollywood production companies start looking at ways in which to explore this newly opened and little-exploited Caribbean paradise which they were banned access to before.

As Senior Policy Advisor to the U.S.-Cuba Trade and Economic Council, John Kavulich, puts it:

"Cuba is a land that many know about, but few have seen. These productions are hoping to capitalise on the increased interest in Cuba."

So far, no big Hollywood production of this size and scale has ever hit Cuba which has seen nothing along the likes of screen-flooding explosives and gravity – defying stunts. The closes it has gotten to a US-based full feature film is the recent indie film “Papa”, which was set during the Cuban Revolution.

A small production that became the first Hollywood film to be shot in Cuba since the 1950s (since the embargo was put in place in 1961) and which premiered at the Havana Film Festival last month, under the direction of Bob Yari and starring Giovanni Ribisi, Papa, had a documentary feel to it as it was about American novelist Ernest Hemmingway and his close relationship with the island.

Filming for Fast & Furious 8 is expected to begin this spring in New York and Atlanta and the film is scheduled to premiere on cinemas on 17th April 2017.
