Celebrities falling for Cuba... and being loved back by fans

Posted: 09-Jan-16 11:37

Cuba is no longer surprised to welcome new celebrities these days as the past year saw a remarkable arrival of big names in the global music industry, film industry, sports world and even politics world making it to the island for (mostly) leisure purposes, even when most also had a humanitarian, cultural or business agenda behind as it's one of the only ways anyone from the US can legally travel to Cuba...for now at least. In the meantime, every showbiz star or politician who visits seems eager to promote the country via one very powerful mainstream channel - their Instagram accounts.

This week it was Ozzy Osbourne who made it to Havana as the latest celebrity to hit the Caribbean’s fastest rising destination at the moment, the tropical communist paradise trending high on every social media channel and climbing to the top of many a traveller’s bucket list… not least of all celebrities who are making the most of the island’s gradual opening up after the official reestablishment of diplomatic relations between the salsa capital of the world and Washington.

Nowadays Cuba is actually getting its best tourism boost from a previously inexistent source: Instagram accounts and other social media channels.

As it turns out virtually every celebrity that now heads to the island rushes to make it public news by uploading a visually appealing or particularly evocative image of the island (often with themselves in it) to their Instagram accounts.

Some announce their soon-to-be-realised Cuban adventure before jetting off (as is the case with rock legend Ozzy Osbourne and his son Jack, who posted a picture of their flight tickets from Los Angeles to Havana before the start of their trip) others do so as soon as they get there (or as soon as they get to a photogenic spot there) while others hope to go unnoticed for as much time as they can before uploading a strategically chosen, well-lit or perfectly filtered, vintage-looking (not that you need any filter to make Cuba look vintage) snap – as was the case with Katy Perry, who managed to go under the radar for a few days before her visit was made public by the media and her first pictures were posted across different news sites.

Fans were kept in the loop though - as soon as she posted a photograph of herself holding a colonial fan and sitting next to a folkloric Cuban lady dressed in traditional afro-Cuban attire.

The only celebrity to refrain (and quite oddly so) from uploading pictures of herself in Cuba on her social media channels was Rihanna, but this was perhaps due to the fact that she was saving it all for when her official photographs by Annie Leibovits made it to the cover of Vanity Fair…maybe she just didn’t want to give away any spoiler… all the same many Cuban fans took their mobile phones out and numerous images of her roaming Havana’s streets flooded the net long before the cover of Vanity Fair made it to the magazine racks.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe couldn’t resist sharing a picture of himself behind the wheel of a classic 1950s Chevy automobile

The new era of selfies has taken Cuba by storm with many fans making the most of every impromptu opportunity to stand next to a spotted celebrity. But it’s not just locals doing the selfie pose …and not just showbiz celebs like Jack and Ozzy Osbourne either…As it turns out, also this week, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe couldn’t resist sharing a picture of himself behind the wheel of a classic 1950s Chevy automobile.

Even though he was on the island on a business trip, leading a trade mission, it seems he wasn’t able to hold back the urge to look like another hip and trendy tourist in Cuba as he Tweeted the picture with the following caption:

“Can’t miss out on the opportunity to drive a classic 1956 Chevy Bel Air NostaliCar named 'Lola'. # Cuba"
