Travellers are recommending to stay in casa particular when visiting Cuba

If you've ever debated a trip to Cuba, the answer of when to go is now! Not only is it easier to travel to Cuba than it's been in more than half-a-century, but there's plenty to learn and explore while you're there. Before you pack your bags, though, there are several things you need to know about traveling to Cuba.

Travellers are recommending to stay in casa particular when visiting Cuba

For more than 50 years it’s been extremely difficult for travellers to visit Cuba, held up by long standing rules and travel regulations between Cuba and the United States. These days, though, a new wave of cooperation between the two countries points to renewed interest in breaking those remaining barriers down.

If you’re planning to travel to Cuba from the U.S., it is now legal as long as your travel plans fall under the umbrella of a dozen different reasons: visiting family members, for religious reasons, to attend athletic events or educational activities or for some type of professional meeting or professional research.

But there is one category under which a lot of Americans are traveling: Help the Cuban people. Spending your expenses in the private services at casa particular, taxis or bars are considered a way of helping the Cuban people. Precisely, Bridget Brooklyn in her article “Start Planning Your Trip to Cuba Now” shares her experience in this sector.

Brooklyn says staying in a private, casa particular was a much better deal than hotels. Most hotels appeared to supply fewer services at a greater price. In addition, she felt a casa particular allows travellers to enjoy better local cuisine, all while meeting locals and staying within a neighbourhood setting. In her article, Brooklyn recommended trying the Melvis House and Maison Cuba, both located in Old Havana, as well as Casa Isorazul, located in Varadero Beach.

Brooklyn alerts that traditional U.S. credit cards and debit cards are of no value in Cuba. Brooklyn’s perception was that locals depend on one type of currency, while visitors are expected to use another type of currency, but that is not necessarily true. However she was entirely correct that U.S. cell phones will not work in Cuba and Internet service is spotty at best, so you cannot depend on Google maps to help you get around the country. Instead, plan ahead by printing out maps.

As for what to bring, she suggested that you pack comfortable shoes and clothing. Travellers will probably be walking a lot. In addition, she recommends to bring what you need because it may be difficult to find items that you’ve left behind. As well, be prepared for frequent travel delays, as public transportation notoriously breaks down.

Still, though, a trip to Cuba is ripe with culture and tradition. From the museums to the lively streets of Havana and the stunning beaches of Varadero, there is plenty to uncover in Cuba. With new travel rules being tested out and refined, the process of traveling to Cuba could become even easier in the near future.
