Potential Hollywood avalanche could put Cuban tourism facilities to the test

American mainstream film industry sees the neighboring country as a very attractive location for its productions, says The New York Times in a follow up of its coverage on Cuba, that has become systematic since Obama and Castro administrations announced a new period towards a political reconciliation.

Potential Hollywood avalanche could put Cuban tourism facilities to the test

In a report entitled "Hola, Cuba! It's Hollywood calling" renowned newspaper The New York Times states that regulations published by the Treasury Department of the United States a year ago opened the door to American projects and to collaboration between the film industry´s mecca and the island´s underfunded film sector.

But the arrival of big production teams and super stars could put local tourism facilities to the test, a situation that has been predicted also with respect to the potential arrival of more than 10 million tourists per year in the island if the embargo is finally lifted.

American producers, filmmakers and actors have visited the neighboring country in small delegations for cultural exchanges before, staying in luxury accommodations like Hotel Nacional or Hotel Saratoga, but these facilities will not be enough if Cuba faces a massive advent of stars and filming staffs.

Now it is possible for American producers to shoot on the streets of the Caribbean country, but just few months ago filming teams will be infringing the embargo legislation. Variety announced on January that the next “Fast & Furious”, by Universal Pictures, will be shot in the Caribbean country, while actor Ethan Hawke said during the 37th International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana last December, that he would like to make there an adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ “Real Path”.

Author Victoria Burnett form The New York Times, encountered in Cuba´s capital a team making a scene for the comedy series “House of Lies”, with actors Don Cheadle, Kristen Bell and Ben Schwartz.

The article in the American newspaper points out how Cuba has become an inspiring and challenging location that could open a wide range of opportunities for producers based in the United States, even when their projects still have to be approved by Cuban cultural authorities.

But the writer also came across the situation of local independent producers and filmmakers who at the moment are providing equipment and personnel to foreign productions:

"Some Cuban filmmakers worry, though, that their government will open its arms to Hollywood while continuing to give its own filmmakers the cold shoulder."

Cuban filmmakers would like to have more opportunities to discuss their projects with American producers, while independent local producers are also seeking for the chance to get involved in co-productions. However, other young filmmakers and entrepreneurs are benefiting from the high demand of filming gear and production services, and foreigners who has worked in the island recognise the dedication of the personnel and the quality of the Cuban actors.

House of Lies creator Mathew Carnahan said to The New York Times that what Cuba is missing:

“...are decent cellphone connections, fast Internet access and even basic things -hammers- things that we don’t give much thought to.”

The new interest on Cuba could be challenging in terms of infrastructure, given that the island is not prepared at the moment for a massive arrival of foreign visitors. An avalanche from Hollywood will demand more luxury hotel allocations, more responsiveness and quality in the private sector, improved mechanisms for flight bookings and more efficient rental of transportation systems.
