Five things to explore outside your Cuban resort

Posted: 17-Mar-16 15:19

While the white sand beaches are definitely enticing, there's much more of Cuba to discover outside the boundaries of your resort. From rich Cuban music to the iconic architecture of Old Havana and picturesque tobacco plantations, here are five good reasons to leave your Cuban resort and explore this unique island nation.

Five things to explore outside your Cuban resort

The beachside resorts and welcoming white sand are only part of the allure of traveling to Cuba. From the streets of Old Havana to the old plantations and the vibrant nightlife, the country is filled with things to do and places to explore.

Flight Centre, a website specialising on all things related to travel, recently explored the 5 things visitors can do outside of their Cuban resort. Writer Crissandra Ayroso described Old Havana’s romantic and historic side, as well as making reference to the excess of rich music, nightlife and traditional sites, all unique to Cuba.

The first place Ayroso suggests visiting is Old Havana. She advises taking an evening stroll along Calle Obispo to uncover some of the area’s most famous restaurants and nightlife. She also says this is a good place to view notable Art Nouveau and Cuban Baroque architecture.

In the article, the writer also recommends stopping at Plaza Vieja, a popular square, as well as making time to visit San Francisco Basilic in the square named the same way, formerly a monastery but currently a live music venue. Additionally, Ayroso recommends visiting the hotel Ambos Mundos, which American novelist Ernest Hemingway lived at for seven years.

The next thing the author says visitors should explore outside of their resort is live music and entertainment. Ayroso references Santiago de Cuba as being the country’s music capital and the location where traditional son-style music first emerged. She also recommends taking a trip to Camaguey to see the Ballet Folklorico Tucumba, an Afro-Cuban dance company known worldwide. Other recommendations mentioned include taking a music and dance tour or even a salsa lesson.

For dancing, the author highlights Disco Ayala in Trinidad, with its five dance floors, nightly cabaret and three bars. Back in Havana, the article recommends a night at the Tropicana, the city’s most famous and oldest nightclub.

The third thing the article points out that travellers can do outside a resort in Cuba is to take a drive along El Malecon. At 8 km long, the road and seawall takes visitors along the northern coast of Cuba, offering waterfront views, spectacular sunsets and a great location for people watching.

The next option for travellers is to take a tour of a tobacco plantation. One of the recommended tours the author discusses is Intrepid’s Grand Cuba tour. She says this is a prime spot for growing some of the best tobacco in the world, and visitors can help harvest or even grind coffee beans.

Lastly, Ayroso mentions the opportunity to visit the memorial to Cuban revolutionary leader Che Guevara in Santa Clara. No matter which location visitors choose, though, the article makes the point that there is plenty to do and see in Cuba awaiting visitors outside the beach resorts.
