Photos showcase Cuban ballet dancers in Havana streets

In capturing the artistry of dance, a photographer creates his own unique artwork, showcasing Cuban culture in an entirely new way. Renowned by online followers for his striking photography pairing dancers against the urban backdrop of major cities, New York-based photographer Omar Robles recently shared his latest photographs from Cuba with the world.

Known for transforming ordinary urban streetscapes into visionary works of art, photographer Omar Robles recently took aim at capturing the beauty and culture of Cuba through his camera lens.

Like many of his previous projects, incorporating the subtle movements of ballet dancers into the urban appeal of large city streets and backdrops, Robles most recently turned his attention to capturing the beauty and heart of Cuba through photography. Writer Nicole Gallucci highlighted ten of the photographer’s most dramatic Cuban dance pictures in an article published on Mashable.

Gallucci writes that Robles told her he has always dreamed of visiting Cuba and was fortunate to not only go there but also get to know local dancers as he captured their graceful moves on city streets and sidewalks while locals went about their daily lives.

The author references Robles’ own blog post in declaring that Cuban dancers are among some of world’s best-trained performers. She continues by writing that the photographer found the Cubans he met inspirational and that he learned a lot about their lives while working behind the camera.

As Robles photographed graceful dancers soaring across narrow pedestrian-filled streets, pirouetting in the rain and gliding across crumbling pavement and sidewalks, he tells Gallucci he also noticed the respectful and courteous way Cubans interact.

“Children actually play in the streets and parks, music is played on public transport, people play chess and dominos in the street corners.”

While the author writes that Robles references the poverty of the country, she also notes that he was greatly moved by the way Cubans deal with it; much different to other large cities in the world, less stressed and kinder to each other.

The Mashable article points out that even though the professional dancers Robles photographed receive money to dance in Cuba, like most Cubans their salaries are low. Even so, Robles is quoted in the article as calling the men and women:

“...some of the most generous and kind-hearted dancers I have worked with.”

Unlike some other countries and cities he’s visited, Robles tells Gallucci that artistry is not only accepted in Cuba but also celebrated and encouraged.

“In our society, we grow with people telling us not to pursue art under any circumstance, or that it should just be a hobby. In Cuba, artists are greatly respected and they respect themselves as well.”

In conclusion, Gallucci adds this world-renowned photographer has now had his own life altered by the passionate nature and pride of the Cuban dancers he worked with, exposing their outstanding, honed-to-perfection dance skills and showcasing their country for the rest of the world to see.
