Five new unconventional ways to explore Cuba

Posted: 17-May-16 18:06

While there's a certain appeal to turning up in Cuba and planning your own adventure, a number of enterprising companies are providing visitors with unique new ways to explore the island. Available as pre-planned activities that can be booked in advance of your visit, in this article we'll take a look at five of the more interesting tour packages currently on offer selected by The Guardian.

Five new unconventional ways to explore Cuba

With tourism taking off in Cuba like never before, there are now more ways than ever to see a side of the country that is tailored to meet your expectations. With everything from motorcycle rides with Che Guevara’s son to family-orientated activities, here are five of the most interesting trips.

La Poderosa tours

For super bike fans or those who have read The Motorcycle Diaries, what could be a better way of seeing Cuba than travelling the country’s winding roads in a procession of Harley Davidsons led by Che Guevaro’s son, Ernesto? With the standard package being a seven-day trip that culminates in a visit to Che’s mausoleum, La Poderosa Tours provide a unique way to explore the country while getting off the beaten track. Journey Latin America

To see Cuba outside of the regular tourist hot-spots of Havana, why not try Journey Latin America’s self-drive tour of the country? Taking in the Vinales valley, forested Las Terrazas, historic Cienfuegos and colonial Trinidad, the trip will enable you to see another side to Cuban life and guests can even add optional extras like a behind-the-scenes tour of Gran Teatro – home of the Cuban National Ballet Company – salsa lessons and a day’s horse-riding.

Stubborn Mule

If you’re visiting Cuba with young children, Stubborn Mule provides the perfect package in the form of its family adventure packages. Starting in Havana, the programme includes fun activities like bike-riding and zipwiring and culminates in two nights in the Cayo Las Brujas beach resort. All hotels along the way have been hand-picked based on their family-friendly qualities, with interconnecting rooms (a rarity in Cuba) coming as standard in each.

Rickshaw Travel

If you want to see the unspoilt side of Cuba and enjoy some of the island’s unique wildlife, Rickshaw Travel has just launched a new trip to Playa Larga in the Bay of Pigs. A beautiful area perfect for nature walks, snorkelling and simply lounging about on pristine beaches, customers will get to enjoy all of the island’s flora and fauna while getting away from the hustle and bustle of cities like Havana, making Rickshaw Travel the perfect company to unwind with.

Global Adventure Challenge

For those who are wild at heart and fit enough to last the course of a 255-mile trip, Global Adventure Challenge is scheduling an incredible bike tour of Cuba next year. With highlights including Havana, colonial city Sancti Spiritus and Santa Clara – where the revolution’s last battle took place in 1958 – those taking the tour will get to see a wide range of Cuban sites that are off most visitor’s radars, but only if they have the quads to keep on going!

These are just a few examples from the wave of enterprising Cubans keen to cash in on the influx of tourism. There are, of course, many more, so it’s well worth checking what’s on offer on the island before you go to make sure you get the very best experience from your trip to the island.
