What to wear on your holiday to Cuba

When it comes to visiting Cuba most visitors are concerned about where to stay and what to do, but along with that comes what to wear! From dining out to lazy days on the beach and exciting island nightlife when the sun goes down, one fashion blogger delves into everything you need to pack for your fashionable Cuban vacation.

What to wear on your holiday to Cuba

Just as important as narrowing down what to do on your visit to Cuba is what to wear while you’re doing it! At least that’s according to one of the fashion bloggers behind Fashion Bomb Daily. Writer Olamide Oladipo, or Lami on her blog, recently returned from a week in Cuba where she describes spending her time visiting beaches, learning about Cuban culture and history and trying out local cuisine. Based on her experience, Lami came up with a few fashion tips to share with her readers.

According to the blogger, fashion is casual in Cuba, and that goes for locals and tourists. With this in mind she alludes to some comfortable clothing and footwear with a fashionable twist. Lami says heels did not seem the appropriate choice for all the sightseeing and walking she did in Cuba. She did however add the “twist” of festive accessories when possible including things like sunglasses and fun fabrics.

Thought Lami reminds her readers that top designer Karl Lagerfeld have launched the Chanel 2017 Resort Collection Preview in Cuba recently but the country as a whole is not exactly brimming with couture. While shopping in Old Havana the blogger says she did find things like knit swimwear for sale, but she also found things like inspirational artwork and woodcarvings.

She points out some outdoor markets seemed to sell a lot of vintage finds from the 1950s and 1960s, such as watches, records, lapel pins and cameras. One accessory that caught her eye was a vintage Movado in near perfect shape. She describes this as one of her super finds while shopping in Cuba. If you want to pick up other things like cigars and rum she mentions the duty free shopping available at Havana’s airport.

While shopping and sightseeing Lami says she mostly opted for jumpsuits. After all, the points out, it’s hot in Cuba and she was going for “island cool”. On the first day, she paired a J.Crew light blue linen jumpsuit with comfortable Nikes. The next day she shared a photograph of herself casually leaning on a vintage yellow convertible wearing another J.Crew ensemble, a leather short set, paired with Dior cat-eye sunglasses.

The writer and her travel companions dressed to tour places like Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de la Habana and walked the boardwalk. As many others have done, she recommends nightlife at Fabrica de Arte Cubano for music, art and dancing on Thursdays through Saturdays plus a cabaret show at Tropicana. They also dressed for eating out at restaurants like the rooftop El Cocinero and tried out drinks at El Floridita before returning to stay with fellow grad students in AirBnBs at night.

When Lami visited the beaches of Varadero, she says topped her simple black swimsuit with a vertical striped, grey and white dress from Urban Outfitters. No matter whether the blogger was keeping it cool while visiting sites or hopping on the short charter flight in and out of Miami she found the experience incredible and exclaims she cannot wait to make another fashionable trip to Cuba in the future.
