The Simpsons family to visit Cuba

Posted: 26-May-16 11:20

An episode of Fox's most famous animated sitcom, The Simpsons, will feature in Cuba in October this year. The decision to use the island as a scenario for the adventures of the yellow family was announced recently by Al Jean, executive producer of the show. This will be the second time in 27 years in which the American television comedy characters appear on the Caribbean island.

The Simpsons family to visit Cuba

The Simpsons family will travel to Cuba during its upcoming season, which will be airing in October this year. Al Jean, executive producer of the animated sitcom created by Matt Groening, said to the media that the episode will feature all the members of the family enjoying Cuban beaches and walking on the streets of Havana, the country´s capital.

The reason why Homer, Bart, Maggie, and Lisa will show up on the island is because grandpa Abe is sick, and they want to take him there to be treated by Cuban doctors. By taking the veteran of World War II to a hospital on the island, the family will corroborate the quality of the prestigious healthcare system in the Caribbean nation.

The producers of the show have announced that this season will be critical for The Simpsons, who has been entertaining worldwide audiences for almost three decades, not only because of the grandfather being sick, but also because Homer and Marge will face a marital crisis as well. However, comedy, humor and irony will be, as usual, the main ingredients of the long-lasting television series, which has been parodying the American culture and society right from its start.

Before this last visit to Cuba, The Simpsons were there for the first time in 1998 to meet Fidel Castro. That episode from the ninth season features Homer, Smithers, and Burns trying to buy the island using a note of one trillion dollars. The Simpsons' new trip to Cuba echoes the recent improvements in governmental relations between the United States and Cuba after more than 50 years of political tensions.

The Caribbean country has become a trending topic in the international media since Barack Obama and Raul Castro decided to appease the long-lasting conflict in 2014, a resolution that has positively impacted the island´s tourism sector with a considerable rise in the number of tourists arriving there. Not just The Simpsons, but many other television shows have been shot on the island since the thawing process began, and, for the first time in many years, Hollywood is also shooting in Cuba.

Discovery Channel relaunched its famous documentary series about sharks with an episode produced on the island while comedian Conan O´Brien went on a one-man mission to meet the local Cuban people last year. The most recent news about celebrities shooting in Cuba involved the Kardashian family starring in their own reality show “Keeping up with The Kardashians” while visiting Havana.
