Havana to celebrate its title as a New Wonder of the Modern World

Posted: 03-Jun-16 11:20

Cuba's capital was chosen one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World by worldwide travellers who completed a survey held by a Swiss foundation in 2014. Havana is famous for being one of the most beautiful and best-preserved colonial cities in Latin America, privileged by its vibrant culture and its strategic position in the Caribbean Sea.

Havana to celebrate its title as a New Wonder of the Modern World

From 7th June 2016 Cubans will be celebrating Havana´s endorsement as one of the Seven Wonder Cities of the World, a title that has been bestowed upon the capital after the results of a survey conducted by a Swiss organisation. The announcement was made few months ago, but now senior members of the European institution that conducted the worldwide online questionnaire will be going to the capital city to officially celebrate the outcome.

To mark the occasion, The Office of the Historian of Havana City has organised a programme of open air activities in one of the most popular areas of the capital, near the Malecon, a seawall promenade that stretches for 8km along the northern coast.

Locals and holidaymakers alike will be able to partake in several cultural activities for free from 7th to 11th June at La Punta esplanade and the long walkway of El Prado, the famous avenue where the presentation of Chanel´s Cruise Collection 2017 took place last month; marking the first time the fashion house hosted an event of this kind in Latin America. The mega fashion show brought a long list of international celebrities to the island, including Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen, British actress Tilda Swinton and film director Geraldine Chaplin.

This time, a much more diverse and inclusive programme will feature performances from the Folkloric National Ballet, the National Lyric Theatre, the Litz Alfonso Ballet as well as dancers from the island’s legendary Tropicana cabaret show and street dancers from the Giganteria group.

The Cuban “comparsa”, a dancing and musical style popularised in the carnivals, will be one of the most important ingredients in the celebration. For the last day of the celebratory programme, the Office of the Historian of the City has also invited the Orquesta Aragon to perform, a traditional “charanga” group that has been present in the Cuban cultural scene for more than 75 years.

In addittion, Richard Weber, president of the Seven Wonders Foundation, will take part in the celebrations next week. The survey conducted by the institution he represents revealed that Cuba´s capital is internationally appreciated by its architecture, culture and history.

According to the survey’s results, Havana’s ranking reveals the city scored higher than Barcelona, Quito and Mexico City, also beating other beautiful and culture-rich cities such as Beirut, Doha, La Paz, Durban, Vigan and Kuala Lumpur.
