Eight reasons for travelling on your own to Cuba

Posted: 10-Jun-16 09:04

Following in the recent footsteps of an American President, an iconic rock-n-roll band and a notorious name in high fashion, there are eight good reasons why you too should consider traveling on your own to Cuba as soon as possible. From eco-rich tours to the area's most notorious restaurants, a new article reveals highlights of visiting the island sooner rather than later.

Eight reasons for travelling on your own to Cuba

President Obama, fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel and The Rolling Stones have all embarked on their own trips to Cuba in recent months and according to a newly published article, you too should plan out a solo excursion sometime soon.

Author Ken Scrudato offers up eight reasons, penning his take on the issue in an online article for BlackBook, self-described as an American-based art, style, culture and lifestyle platform.

Scrudato recommends making the solo trip sooner than later, basing his advice on speculation that major retailers that already exist in numerous other cities around the globe have eyes on transforming Cuba next.

History

One of the big reasons has to do with historical locations. Cuba is stoped in time so holidaymaker will find plenty of history as they travel around the country. Revered for its restaurants and bars, its modern swimming pool and surrounded by the Prado promenade cafes, Mercure Hotel Sevilla has also enticed the likes of famous people such as Josephine Baker and Al Capone. It’s been in operation since 1880.

Preferential treatment

The author notes now is the time to be treated like a famous person, yourself, with a personal escort that will easily assist you in gaining transportation around Cuba or any other issue you could find.

Private escort

As a solo traveller, you can also request a private guide, expertly leading you through places such as La Habana Vieja (Old Havana), a 16th century open air museum. You can even choose to go by your own itinerary, as you’re on your own. Nowadays tourist guides have low fares so hiring one of them is very cheap; an opportunity you don't find easily in other destinations.

Eco tours

Other tours at your disposal include eco tours, such as those to Las Terrazas Village. Along with the surrounding national park of Sierra del Rosario, the area is a UNESCO biosphere reserve. From cycling to nature walks, you may choose to indulge on organic vegetarian delights at one of its paladars or visit the studios of local artists.

Dine in Cuba

Other dining recommendations include restaurants featuring contemporary food and a festive, rooftop atmosphere, such as El Cocinero, the historic location of Plaza de la Catedral for dining at popular El Patio or La Divina, for impressive views of the bay.

Plantation tour

You can also take a private tour and tasting at the Buenavista coffee plantation, taking a step back into life in the 19th century in Havana, a place named the number one coffee city in the world by The Daily Meal.

Live entertainment

For lively entertainment, the author recomends joining others at Cabaret Parisien, located in Hotel Nacional. With a blend of Latin, Indo-American and African influence, the stage show once entertained such famous guests as Frank Sinatra and former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Visit a fortress

For a delightful and more subdued evening, the author suggests envisioning what it was like to spot enemy ships from atop the Spanish fortress of Parque Morro Cabana.

Scrudato released his list of eight reasons, timed to coincide with the release of Havana for the Solo Traveler, a new program by Cuba Travel Network, launching this month.
