What should you know before you head to Cuba for the first time? Help is at hand. Journalist Hirania Luzardo, for whom Cuba is her homeland, recently published her top tops for anyone wanting to make their way to the holiday hotspot.

Tips for tourists heading to Cuba

Travelling to Cuba is a very memorable experience and an opportunity for tourists immerse themselves in another culture. For those who have never been to this beautiful island nation before, there are a few things to keep in mind before travelling.

Luckily, journalist Hirania Luzardi has shared some of her tips for outsiders visiting Cuba after a recent visit to her homeland with her US partner.

Here are some of Hirania’s tips that “gringo amigo”, as locals called her boyfriend, should know before visiting Cuba.

  • It is not necessary to arrive at the airport four hours before your boarding time – getting there two hours before is fine.
  • When you arrive in Havana after the 45-minute flight -departuring from US- you will enter an old terminal with air condition and sometimes you will need to wait a long time for your luggage – so be patient. Se doen't know but this tip also applies for flights comming from Europe.
  • There is a limit to how many electronic devices you can bring – if you bring more than two per person you might need to fill out papers at the airport. If you have more than a phone and a laptop or tablet, you will need to return with these items or pay for their cost if you leave them.
  • In many of the bathrooms there is an attendant who sells sheets of toilet paper and you will need to pay them if you want to use it.
  • Renting a car is easy but it can be difficult to drive due to the poor condition of the roads.
  • Make sure that you have change on you for tips. The wages are low and tipping is how many people in the service industry make a living.
  • If you are looking to taste homemade Cuban food, your best option is a paladar restaurant – which is a family run business.
  • Make sure that you take the opportunity to explore beyond Havana and really get to see other aspects of the country.
  • Be aware that you will see poverty and people struggling to meet their basic needs.

These are just a few important tips to keep in mind before visiting Cuba for the first time. Keep an open mind, be curious and inquisitive and embrace every aspect of the adventure and you’re sure to have an unforgettable trip.
