As travel restrictions for Americans visiting Cuba continue to ease more and more families are deciding to plan out a holiday of their own to the island nation. From the most kid-friendly cultural attractions to the best places to have outdoor adventures, Cuba offers up a range of possibilities for kids of all ages.

Top Cuban excursions for families

If you’ve been thinking of planning a family holiday to Cuba now may be the best time of all to get started. With the recent ease of travel restrictions for Americans visiting the country, it’s now easier than it’s been for decades for families to head to Cuba.

Recently a blog posted on The Huffington Post outlined some of the top Cuban excursions for families.

Trinidad

One of the most highly suggested recommendations is an excursion to Trinidad. Life in this old colonial town runs at a much slower pace than other places in Cuba, from taking a horse-drawn carriage down the cobblestone streets to catching a concert on the steps of the cathedral. It’s not uncommon either for visitors to simply join in on a game of soccer in the outdoor plaza.

Zapata Swamp

Known as the Caribbean’s largest wetland, the Zapata Swamp Biosphere is noted as an interesting place to view endangered birds and nearly extinct crocodiles. It’s also the place to view several other interesting animals and plant-life up close.

Once nearly wiped off the planet, families can now encounter the Crocodylus acutus and Crocodylus rhombifer in a safe environment, touching and even feeding the reptiles. A Zapata Swamp excursion may also feature a boat tour of Treasure Lagoon, including a stop at the Bay of Pigs and a visit to the replica of a primitive Taino village.

Old Havana

Not far from the Zapata Swamp many travellers choose to focus their holiday around the capital City of Havana. There’s plenty to see in this designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the Malecon seawall and the Morro Castle fortress. It’s recommended families see the city by taking a couple of hours to tour around in a vintage American car.

If you have time you can also tour Callejon de Hamel by foot. Part religious monument and part art project, Hamel’s Alley is an old passageway that was transformed by a sculptor and painter into a beautiful display of paint, tile and old objects. Typically a tour will include performances of folkloric rumba dance plus Afro-Cuban history and religious symbolism.

Vinales

To experience yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site, visitors are urged to take a day trip from Havana to Vinales. Best for older kids, you can choose to tour tobacco and coffee plantations by horseback. It’s a popular spot for all ages, though, to go rock climbing, caving and hiking.

Santa Clara

For a true sense of history, make sure to visit the Che Guevera Museum and Mausoleum in Santa Clara. With artefacts, personal memorabilia and photographs, the location recounts the life of a Cuban revolutionary leader. Even if you have young kids it’s suggested you take in the Armoured Train Monument. Set in an outdoor sculpture garden the site includes posters and artefacts in rail cars to tell about one of Cuba’s most important revolutionary battles.

No matter whether your family is more interested in a historical tour or adventurous tour, Cuba is ripe with opportunity for kids and grownups to explore all that the island has to offer.
