Peggy Goldman's top 5 places in Havana

As the president and co-founder of Friendly Planet Travel and one of the tourism industry's leading experts on Cuba, Peggy Goldman certainly knows a thing or two about enjoying Havana in style. Fortunately, you don't need to have Goldman's encyclopaedic knowledge of the historic city enjoy a host of unique locations as she recently shared her inside insight on Havana with Cuba Journal.

Peggy Goldman's top 5 places in Havana

When confronted with the bustling Cuban city of Havana for the first time, it can be hard for new visitors to know exactly where to look. There seems to be so much happening on every street corner that making sense of it all can seem like a daunting task, but thankfully help is at hand courtesy of the expert opinions of Peggy Goldman.

President and co-founder of Friendly Planet Travel, Goldman knows the historic city like the back of her hand and recently shared her top five places to visit in Havana with Cuba Journal. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at Goldman’s picks to help you decide where should be first on your itinerary.

Hotel Nacional Gardens

Havana can be an exhausting city to explore, Goldman writes. She recommends to unwind after a long day out on the streets. She suggests stopping into the Hotel Nacional’s gardens and courtyard to kick back with a cigar and daiquiri. From here, you can enjoy a beautiful green setting while taking in panoramic views of Havana’s harbour and the Morro Castle lighthouse.

The Malecon

Of course, you didn’t come to Havana just to lounge around on rattan chairs and drink cocktails, so Goldman recommends throwing yourself in at the deep end by visiting the famous Malecon sea wall. Here, as the day cools and the pathway swells in population and volume, you’ll find a fascinating cross-section of Cuban people, so be prepared to say hello and immerse yourself in conversation.

Plaza de Armas

For cafe-hopping, souvenir shopping and simple people watching, Goldman suggests visiting the Plaza de Armas in Old Havana. Home to the Used Bookseller Market and several interesting attractions including the Havana City Museum and Natural History Museum, Plaza de Armas is the perfect place to pick up a piece of Cuban culture you can take home with you.

Plaza Vieja

While it’s nice to experience the thriving street life of modern Havana, no visit to the city is complete without taking in the historical Plaza Vieja. A beautifully restored site teeming with homes, cafes and even a school, Goldman particularly likes the area as it gives visitors a real taste of Old Havana. Filled with fascinating art and architecture, Plaza Vieja is also the best place to catch traditional live music.

Christopher Columbus Cemetery

Another historical site on Goldman’s Havana hit-list, Christopher Columbus Cemetery is the final resting place of generations of Cuban aristocracy. In order to get the most out of your visit, Goldman recommends exploring the site with a guide who can explain the various tombs to you and also suggests that you stick around to watch the locals offer prayers to the statute of the Virgin each day.

As you can see from Goldman’s suggestions above, there’s a wealth of history and culture to be discovered in Havana if you know where to look. Whether you want to mingle with the locals, haggle with street traders, take in a piece of history or simply kick back and relax with a freshly-mixed drink, the city offers a host of options – and the folk at Friendly Planet Travel can help you enjoy them all.
