Travel blogger recounts her life altering visit to Trinidad

Travel blogger Liesbeth, of Lili's Travel Plans, recently wrote a post about her experience as a young traveller in Trinidad, Cuba. Not surprisingly, Liesbeth, recalls how much her first holiday experience outside of Europe in such a unique culturally rich destination changed her perspective of the world and shaped her into the kind of traveller she is today- one that focuses on the people and "journey" more than the destination itself.

Travel blogger recounts her life altering visit to Trinidad

Liesbeth, the Belgium born travel enthusiast and blogger behind the travel blog Lili’s Travel Plans recently recalled her visit to Trinidad, Cuba eight years ago, before she was a seasoned globetrotter.

By her own admission, Cuba was the first country she had ever visited outside of Europe and it would seem that the time spent in Trinidad was not only life changing but it also helped to shape her view of travelling and indeed of the world.

Like so many seasoned holidaymakers, Liesbeth’s advice to those holidaying in Trinidad, Cuba is to live in the moment, veer off the beaten path, “ditch the guidebook and go get lost!” Let the journey be less about checking off a list of sites to see but instead seek to absorb as much as possible of the rich Cuban culture and the people. Soak in the music, take salsa lessons, dance with the locals and take the time to truly appreciate and understand the depth of their hospitality.

Liesbeth concludes her piece by thanking Trinidad for showing her the kind of traveller she wants to be. She explained:

“It’s nice to have thousands of pictures, souvenirs and a world map on the wall with 45 been-there-done-that pins on it, but it’s the human adventures I will always remember first”.

Cuba has long been one of the Caribbean’s best loved and most talked about holiday destinations, indeed prior to the 1959 Revolutions Cuba boasted a booming tourism industry and, after the crisis in the 90's, the tourism industry began a new moment of expansion. In the last couple of years, the Caribbean island’s tourism sector has been enjoying a new wind and with US Cuba relations going from strength to strength the island’s tourism figures continues to trend upwards.

Notably in 2015 Cuba ends listed as the second largest holiday destination in the Caribbean and 2016 is shaping up to be an equally impressive year. Cuban officials recently released their figures for midyear 2016 and reported a 11.9 per cent growth in foreign arrivals for the first half of 2016 when compared to the same time last year. Among Cuba’s key source markets are Germany, the UK, France, Italy, Mexico, Argentina and, of course, the US.

A recent survey conducted by Switchfly, indicated that as many as 37 per cent of Americans were considering booking a holiday in Cuba. With more people being able to access Cuba, it’s no surprise that travel writers like Liesbeth are keen to help holidaymakers make the most of their experience in this unique destination.
