Ten routes for US and Cuba flights established

US airlines and potential travellers excitedly await the final green light for the beginning of regular direct flights to Cuba. With Havana recently added as one of the main destinations, the American Department of Transportation (DOT) has now revealed the possible routes, including carriers and frequency. If all goes according to plan, flights should start as soon as this autumn.

Ten routes for US and Cuba flights established

On 16th February 2016, Anthony Foxx, DOT secretary and Charles Rivkin, assistant secretary for the Department of State on Economic and Commercial Affairs, signed an agreement with their Cuban counterparts that would pave the way for the re-establishment of regular air service between the two countries for the first time in fifty years. Although both parties have been working enthusiastically to make this process quick and efficient, they have found difficult obstacles along the way including the deemed "unfit" conditions of Havana’s Airport.

After careful evaluation and bilateral work and discussions, these initiatives were finally approved a week ago by the US Department of Transportation which announced regular flight service from eight different companies to Cuba’s capital, Havana, from ten American cities.

In order to “present the public with a wide array of travel choices” the DOT tentatively approved eight airlines (two more than those announced in June), ranging from low-cost carriers to big flying companies: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines.

Today, a provisional list of routes was published. While most of the initial routes originated in Florida, this latest batch includes nonstop flights from Los Angeles (Alaska Airlines), Charlotte (American), New York-JFK (Delta and JetBlue), Newark (United), Houston (United) and Atlanta (Delta), in addition to Miami (AA, Delta, Frontier), Orlando (JetBlue), Fort Lauderdale (JetBlue, Southwest and Spirit) and Tampa (Southwest).

Authorities insist, however, that these routes are still no definitive and that airlines must give the final go ahead for the sale of tickets until a final decision is reached by the end of the summer. Airlines have until 22nd July to object the DOT’s decision and will receive an answer within a week. Nonetheless, as flying companies were assigned many of their requested routes, and US carriers may only operate a total of 20 daily round-trips to Havana, it seems likely that this list should be approved.

Most airline companies are looking to commence their flight services in the autumn and winter seasons of 2016-2017. The DOT explained:

“...those who receive authorization will probably start selling tickets well in advance of the first departure dates.”

At the sight of this promising future, DOT secretary, Anthony Foxx posted on his Twitter account:

“Today, we take another important step toward delivering on President Obama’s promise to reengage Cuba. The re-establishment of air service has an enormous potential to reunite Cuban-American families and promote education and opportunities for American businesses of all sizes.”

Enthusiastic travellers who have spent months expecting regular flight service can now rejoice in the good news. However, American citizens must remember tourism to the island is still off the table and in order to visit they must fit into one of the 12 legal categories approved by US government.
