Havana makes it to the cover of yet another fashion magazine

Yet another haute couture magazine lands in Cuba, this time for a full coverage fashion edit featuring high-end models, Anais Mali and Riley Montana. Following in the steps of Vanity Fair with their November 2015 issue, which featured Rihanna on the cover posing against a classic car, the July 2016 edition of Vogue Ukraine has yet another Cuban yank tank featuring prominently on its cover - this time with two international models showing it off to the world.

Havana makes it to the cover of yet another fashion magazine

It’s funny we once pondered on the fact that Cuba is very much in vogue, with the amount of high-profile celebrities flocking there seemingly overnight. Now Vogue has finally turned its eyes to the country and drawn inspiration from the Cuban capital for one of their summer edits; featuring in this month’s issue of the magazine’s Ukrainian edition.

The cover of the July 2016 issue of Vogue Ukraine was graced by none other than a Cuban classic car; once again drawing a major emphasis on the country’s photogenic vintage appeal and in line with yet another major fashion magazine shoot – the one that showed Rihanna provocatively leaning against one of those four-wheeled Cuban beauties for the November 2015 issue of Vanity Fair, aptly entitled Our Woman in Havana: Rihanna.

It seems these old Cuban yank tanks have become fashion’s biggest props when it comes to styling photoshoots in Havana – the only differences between Rihanna’s Vanity Fair fashion cover and Vogue Ukraine’s being the colour and parts of the car shown. While Rihanna’s classic car was a metallic blue and she posed against a rear, sideways’ view of the vehicle, Vogue Ukraine’s modelling pair did so in the front part of the car, against the bonnet, and the car was a very light pink in colour.

But turn the pages inside and the more obvious differences are clear. While Rihanna’s was a personal photoshoot to go with a personal interview and the photographs were inspired by the artist’s own personality and undeniably sex appeal; Vogue’s shoot was strictly fashion, with a winning pair of internationally renowned, professional models employed for the job and dressed in a variety of some of the world’s biggest fashion labels.

Modelling luxury garments and accessories from the likes of Prada, Christian Dior and Marc Jacobs, to name but a few, Vogue Ukraine’s photo muses paraded haute couture down Havana’s streets like they naturally belonged there; spanning a large variety of locations, from the oldest parts of the city to the more modern downtown area in the Vedado municipality.

Inspired by the stark contrasts that can only be appreciated in a place like Havana (and there aren’t many places in the world like it, to be sure), French model Anais Mail and her American counterpart, Riley Montana, worked a variety of looks in a myriad of settings that included once-grand-and-now-decayed colonial buildings, the interior of old mansions with faded marble staircases, old buses and even the inside of an empty pool. It was the Havana of yesteryear, the one that retains its magnetic allure despite its crumbling façade, the one that everyone lusts after and all celebrities pose against. The very same that inspired Karl Lagerfeld to bring his large posse of models, photographers and celebrity friends for an open-air Chanel fashion show in the streets of Havana that made history.

Let’s not forget either that Cuba and the Ukraine once shared strong political ties during the Soviet years, were Cuba was once of the Soviet Union’s main allies, and certainly its main and only counterpart in the Americas. So, again, it was apt that a fashion photoshoot in Cuba would grace Vogue’s Ukranian edition of all places. With a nostalgic nod to the communist years, the magazine reminds of Cuba’s place in the fashion world against its singular, socialist background.

Photographed by Hans Neumann, the beautiful modelling duo donned a selection of fashion numbers that often went hand in hand with the island’s vibrant colours and cultural identity. There was everything in the range, from more intricate, busy sequinned numbers bursting with colour and paying homage to the island’s African “santeria” icons, to lighter numbers and fabrics that perfectly flowed in the soft Caribbean breeze, elegant nostalgia pieces that featured elements reminiscent of the 50s, 60s and 70s to more modern, simpler, light-coloured fabrics with clean, easy cuts. There surely was something for all tastes, and all truly embracing the summer season with utmost style.
