Trinidad makes it to the top three of Cuba's main tourist destinations

According to official reports, Trinidad is betting strong on its tourism appeal, so much so that this year so far it has managed to attract record-breaking crowds of tourists from various corners of the world. Officially it has welcomed thousands more tourists in the first half of 2016 than during the same period last year.

Trinidad makes it to the top three of Cuba's main tourist destinations

Trailing hot on Havana and Varadero’s tracks, Cuba’s two main tourist destinations and the two around which most twin-centre holidays to Cuba are built; Trinidad is quickly solidifying its stance as one of the island´s most culturally and historically appealing. It’s not mighty because of its size (in fact it’s minuscule when compared to Cuba’s other main tourist destinations) but Trinidad has managed to secure itself a spot in the ranking of Cuba’s top three holiday destinations; and it has done so thanks to its uniquely preserved state dating back centuries.

According to recently unveiled official reports from the Cuban government, this small, quiet and unassuming city in Cuba’s south-eastern region is proving immensely popular with tourists in recent times with the number of foreign visitors growing by the thousands this year.

The official statement revealed that Trinidad had welcomed to its quaint squares and nearby UNESCO heritage sites, thousands more tourists when compared to last year’s first semester, with a marked growth in the number of visitors arriving from Germany, France and Canada.

Once a highly overlooked destination that few tourists ventured to (it´s nearly a four-hour-drive from the capital), Trinidad has plenty to wow travellers and is not surprising that as Cuba opens up to the world and more visitors are intrigued by its aged attractions and stark contrasts, this peculiar little town comes out on top. In fact, only a few months back Trinidad was ranked one of the ten most beautiful colonial cities in America, and with good reason to, more than a handful of reasons to be fair.

Trinidad is Cuba’s quintessential colonial jewel, the one city in the island that has been immaculately preserved against the passage of time. So much so that you will find the vast majority of things in the same state they were left centuries ago, when the city was inhabited by wealthy sugar barons that profited from Cuba’s booming sugar industry and who ruled over the nearby sugar mills. And in Trinidad you can visit the roots of this money-making industry at the Valley of the Sugar Mills, yet another well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site that sits just moments from Trinidad’s city centre.

But Trinidad is more than colonial beauty, exquisite luxury remnants from a bygone era or the historic remains of enslaved sugar production, it’s also a city poised close to the sea and the mountains, with the nearby Topes de Collantes (part of the Escambray Mountain Range) a short drive away, and the beautiful beach of Playa Ancon, less than a 20-minute ride from the heart of the town.

So, why the growing number of visitors to this singular part of Cuba, you ask? Plenty, Trinidad has city, sea and mountain, history and culture, charm and characted. Trinidad has it all, and more.
