Trinidad gets significant boost in tourism infrastructure

Gearing up to the national celebration of 26 July and Fidel Castro's upcoming 90th birthday on 13th August, Cuba's third most visited city received a makeover that upgraded a variety of facilities for the benefit of tourist and locals. From airport renovations to hotel additions and the maintenance of cobblestone streets in the city's historic centre, the works all contributed to keeping the city firmly on the map for visitors and enhancing the lives of its local inhabitants.

Trinidad gets significant boost in tourism infrastructure

Not long ago we were echoing the news that Trinidad had become Cuba’s third most visited city by foreign travellers, with its rise in popularity putting Trinidad in Cuba’s top three holiday destinations. Now we learn that the city has recently undergone a major renovation process with refurbishment works carried out across a selection of public venues which included its airport, main streets, restaurants and health facilities – many of which directly boosted the city’s tourism infrastructure.

Starting with Trinidad’s Alberto Delgado airport; its runway’s lighting system received a full upgrade while a new radio beacon was installed to improve the quality of communications between the airport and the small to medium-sized domestic planes that touch down there, which mainly come from Havana and Varadero.

Renovations also included a full makeover of La Canchanchara, a favourite haunt for tourists and locals alike, famous for serving the most authentic sips of “canchanchara”, the local autochthonous cocktail made from rum, lemon, honey and water, after which the bar is aptly named. This popular venue which attracts the crowds also thanks to its frequent live music (which often gives way to spontaneous dancing) underwent a full transformation with a full update to its décor as well as the comfort of its facilities.

In addition, a new snack bar was added to the Horizontes Ma Dolores hotel, right next to the pool area, adding a touch of comfort and convenience to hungry and thirsty bathers or avid sun-tanners. Offering light bites and drinks the new “ranchon” also offers additional shade right next to toilet facilities. With this hotel recently being on high demand among tourists visiting from France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the number of its rooms (or “cabanas”) has been recently expanded as well, with a boosted capacity for up to 130 guests.

Non-tourism related works also included a series of renovations carried out to upgrade a local dentist clinic’s facilities and the reconditioning of a local food factory. Moreover, some maintenance has been given to the cobblestone streets along the city’s historic centre have as well as improving road conditions elsewhere in the city.

Duznel Zerquera Amador, director of the Office of the City’s Curator offered insight into the profitable gains from the non-governmental private sector, which is also booming in Trinidad in the form of “paladares” and “casas particulares”. He added that the recent efforts for the restoration of the city were aimed at procuring a sustainable tourism development that doesn’t pose a threat to the conservation of old buildings, many of which earned the city its title as a UNECO World Heritage Site.
