Underwater photography competition IMASUB makes a splash in Cuba

Posted: 03-Aug-16 09:00

With the Cuban seabed being home to some truly breathtaking flora and fauna, the island paradise was a no-brainer to host the sixth annual edition of the popular underwater photography competition, IMASUB. With On Cuba magazine on hand to report on the best of the action, their latest online article brings you a first-hand account of events and the pick of this year's photography.

Underwater photography competition IMASUB makes a splash in Cuba

Since the dawn of time man has been fascinated with what lies beneath the waves, but with digital photography coming on in leaps and bounds in recent years, the mysteries of the deep are no longer so hard to find. Indeed, technology has now reached a point where even an amateur diver with the right gear can capture hidden worlds below sea level – and this fact was celebrated at IMASUB 2016.

An underwater photography meeting organised annually by the Gaviota Tourism Group, this year IMASUB took place at the International Diving Centre Maria la Gorda in the south of Cuba’s Pinar del Rio province. Part of the Guanahacabibes National Park, the area is a site of incredible natural beauty and is famed for the diversity of its marine flora and fauna, making it the ideal dive location.

IMASUB 2016 event saw 18 participants – comprised mainly of local Cubans – throw themselves in at the deep end and take a series of stunning pictures over the course of two days. In total, 67 images were submitted during the event, with a panel of three judges evaluating entries in each of the four categories – “Environment”, “Environment with Model”, “Fauna” and “Macro”.

Plenty of fish

The panel itself was comprised of American Neal Watson, Frenchman Jean Michel Huot and Cuban Hector Sardinas Peace and – after much deliberation – that triumvirate was able to single out 20 photographs to win awards or special mentions, with images being judged on a range of important factors including sharpness, exposure, composition and the level of difficulty involved in the shot.

In addition to the photography competition, this year’s IMASUB event included a number of free and competitive dives on each day of the meet-up, while scuba enthusiasts were also treated to a variety of evening entertainment including workshops, guest talks and top quality catering. All in all, the event was a great success, but fans will now have to wait until June 24, 2017 for the next instalment.

Many of the photos taken during IMASUB 2016 can be viewed at the On Cuba magazine website or on the group’s Facebook page, so if you want to see Cuba’s underwater kingdom in all its vibrant glory, we advise checking out this year’s winning entrants for yourself.
