Travel Mad Mum shares tips for family travel to Cuba

As one of the most popular holiday destinations of the moment, Cuba is appealing for a broad range of travellers; from adventurous loners and romantic honeymooners to large groups of friends and families alike.

Travel Mad Mum, an Irish blogger with a passion for discovering as many different corners of the world as possible, recently visited Cuba with her husband and child. As an experienced blogger and traveller, she shares her tips and experiences during her stay in the island.

Vinales, Cuba

Cuba had been on her bucket list for some time, and she was eager to get to Cuba soon before any radical changes come along. During her trip, Travel Mad Mum visited the natural countryside sites of Vinales, the stunning beach hub of Varadero and the country’s vibrant and animated capital, Havana.

Three renowned Cuban destinations Travel Mad Mum visited:

Vinales

Vinales, Cuba

During their days in Pinar del Rio, the family was able to get close to locals as they stayed in a lovely “casa particular”, within the Valley of Vinales. Encircled by mountains and dramatic rock formations, Vinales is perfect for adventurous hikers and climbers. It is also known for tobacco growing, and the fields look incredible with their mountainous backdrop and Cubans trekking through on horses.

Vinales, Cuba

Some of the highlights of their trip in Vinales included horse riding with a local, taking family salsa lessons which the little girl particularly enjoyed, as she shook her maracas. and taking a drive with a tourist guide that took them to amazing spots. As the drove in a classic car, they stopped at non-touristy tobacco farms and an underground cave. The family also observed ancient stalactite and stalagmite formations and drifted along in a boat on the underwater river. Travel Mad Mum enjoyed some of the best meals at “paladares”, and hte Paradise was their personal favourite.

Varadero

Varadero, Cuba

Renowned for its pristine white sandy beaches and glorious aqua blue water, Varadero showed the family the joys of all-inclusive service. Staying at the Iberostar Varadero, Travel Mad Mum appreciated why many families choose this option, with endless activities, entertainment and amazing swimming pools.

Varadero, Cuba

Cuban-themed entertainment provided for a more authentic feel, and the relaxed joy of ordering a few cheeky mojitos whilst enjoying the sun rays on the beach were lovely experiences that helped the family unwind.

Havana

Havana, Cuba

According to the Irish blogger, the colourful capital was one of the most amazing sites she had seen:

“The crumbly paint on old buildings, intricately detailed windows and classic cars are a photographer’s wonderland. Live salsa music can be heard everywhere. Locals can be seen spontaneously dancing on the street; Esme (her daughter) had no problem getting involved!”

Staying at Iberostar Parque Central, the young family enjoyed the rooftop pool with amazing views of Havana. Renting a 50s car with a tour guide, they were able to visit important landmarks such as the Revolution Square and the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, and brush up on local history.

Havana, Cuba

On the last day, the little girl was left to the hotel’s baby-sitting service whilst the parents went out for stroll around Obispo Street in Old Havana, where they heard the beats of salsa and bolero coming from all bars and restaurants.

Top tips for family travel to Cuba

Travel Mad Mum concludes that:

“When travelling around Cuba with a young family, I feel it is best to go by private transfer for both comfort and reliability reasons, something The Holiday Place truly helped them plan.”

The Irish blogger insists on four main aspects to make sure your family holiday in Cuba is as enjoyable as they can be. The first tip is that when travelling with little ones it is important to bring as many baby supplies as possible. Though certain shops, like the one in the Sevilla Hotel include baby articles, nappies and other products are not easy to find in the island, so it is better to stay on the safe side.

On a different note, it is always best to prearrange visas and bring proof of travel insurance and other important documents you may be asked for. Change cash for the Cuban convertible currency (CUC) and even exchange these for Cuban pesos as several cafes and street vendors only accept these.

Other genuine experiences in Cuba

Whatever kind of travel you choose, it is always best to seek advice before making a decision. Many bloggers have shared their experiences in Cuba, so whether it’s exploring Cuba’s colonial cities, losing yourself inside its rich culture and music, or stepping deep into its astounding nature, these travellers offer amazing viewpoints and advice for those who seek to get to know the island.
