Cuba partners with Canada's ITHQ on major decade-long tourism project

In a bid to raise hospitality standards in Cuba, experts from Canada will be working alongside professionals from the Caribbean island to deliver significant improvements. The project will run for between eight and ten years, with raising the profile of Cuban cuisine one major objective.

Cuba partners with Canada's ITHQ on major decade-long tourism project

According to a new report on ETN Global Travel Industry news, a brand new, major tourism project set to span between eight and ten years has been launched, partnering the Cuban Ministry of Tourism, particularly its FORMATUR division, with the Institut de tourisme et d'hotellerie du Quebec (ITHQ), with the goal being to raise S hospitality standards on the Caribbean island, and raise the overall profile of Cuban cuisine.

From now through to September 2018, for example, the ITHW will hold training activities for cooking professors and directors at five hotel schools which have been designated as priorities by FORMATUR, which specialises in the hotel industry. Trainers already working in hotels and cooks are also eligible to attend. In addition to this, the professionals will also analyse and assess the quality of Cuba's own cooking programmes, with the aim of developing practice-focussed training that can be launched in the next three years.

Areas of the business like cooking equipment and food supply purchases will also be touched upon, fundamentally looking to give a 360-degree boost to this vital area of the country's tourism economy, which is currently in something of a boom period. Reports from visitors have painted wildly varying pictures of the cuisine side of hospitality. Many hotel schools are praised for their delivery of theoretical education, while rated poorly for allowing people to develop practical skills.

The project has now been launched, and the ITHQ's general director, the Honourable Liza Frulla, P.C., O.Q., paid a visit to the island country to kick start the initiative. She was joined by another pair of representatives from the Canadian organisation, who arrived in Havana on 12th September as part of an “economic mission group” that also included Philippe Couillard, Quebec Premier, giving some idea as to the status of those who were sent over from North America.

Frulla said:

"This initiative will help increase Cuba's attraction as a tourist destination. In addition to the other training activities we have carried out in the world, this project will reinforce the ITHQ's position as an international centre for training in tourism, hotel and restaurant services. It will generally inspire similar initiatives, particularly in Latin America. The relationships we establish will also help Quebec companies in our sector to come do business in Cuba"

The launch of the project comes at a time when Cuba's tourism economy is experiencing something of a boom period, with visitor numbers growing, largely as a result of reduced sanctions that have made it easier for U.S. citizens to enter the Caribbean island, providing they are there for one of 12 special 'reasons' to visit, including family ties, people-to-people tours, and religious or educational trips.
