Maroon 5 on the waiting list to shoot music video in Cuba

Posted: 12-Oct-16 12:15

Due to unforeseen and undisclosed circumstances, Maroon 5 has had to delay the shooting of their music video in Cuba and postpone it until next year. An unnamed source spoke to Cibercuba to confirm the news that Maroon 5 have been forced to put on hold their shooting plans in Cuba due to not receiving the necessary authorisations from the Cuban counterparts in time. Shooting is expected to commence by the first half of next year, by which time it is hoped that negotiations between Cuban and American producers have reached good terms for the video to finally happen.

Maroon 5 on the waiting list to shoot music video in Cuba

Fast and Furious have made it to Cuba, so has Discovery Chanel with their Cuban Chrome reality TV series, Mick Jagger with the BBC, House of Lies with the shooting of their last season episode in Havana, plus a number of other U.S. films and productions in recent times (as well as non-U.S. foreign film-makers), yet it seems that for Maroon 5, the hurdles are bigger and the race to the finish line longer. It seems the popular American band hasn’t been able to consolidate final agreements for the shooting of a music video in Cuba, which they initially intended to shoot at the end of last August.

A couple of months ago we let you in on the fact that Maroon 5 had plans to shoot a music video in Cuba, with all of the band members allegedly in the process of obtaining visas to travel to the island at the time. Beyond that there were also rumours flying that the music group was also excited about the idea of giving a concert in Cuba and follow in the steps of other U.S. bands who’ve recently given concerts in Havana, like Major Lazer and The Rolling Stones. But the music video would be first, they said, although now we’re not really sure as to what will develop first and how, given that the video project has been delayed for months it seems.

According to a close source to the negotiations who has talked to CiberCuba and prefers to remain anonymous, Maroon 5’s plans to shoot their next video clip in various locations of the Cuban capital have been put on hold due to the fact they didn’t receive the permits needed in time from the Cuban authorities.

The project, which involves Cuban and American producers, with a group of the latter travelling to Cuba in August to finalise details of the shooting, came to a sudden halt when everything seemed all but finished and both sides were getting ready to starting filming.

As revealed by the same unnamed source, who is linked to said project, the cause for such a pause was Cuban authorities changing their mind with regards to which Cuban entity would be sponsoring the films. Such a task was initially given to the ICAIC (Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Arts and Industry) but it has now been passed down to the hands of Cuban TV company, RTV commercial.

But Maroon 5 aren’t the only musicians whose intentions to film in Cuba have been recently curbed. In recent months, other international artists like Enrique Iglesias and Paulina Rubio (both of whom also wanted to shoot music videos in the capital) have seen their filming projects delayed due to Cuban authorities not granting the necessary permits in time. It’s all a waiting game it seems, and none of the mentioned singers are throwing in the towel. We’ll just have to wait a bit longer to see those quirky, tropical and iconic Cuban music videos come to life.

Cuban filmmaker and music video producer, Alejandro Perez, who would be directing Enrique Iglesias and Paulina Rubio’s music videos in Cuba, voiced his discontent at the authorities’ lack of engagement and lax attitude. Expressing his disillusionment, he said:

"I think it’s not right because I am Cuban and I’ve always done things by the book. I always try to defend and not criticise my country. Convincing those people of shooting in Cuba is not easy, despite the recent opening, it remains a problem for them to come here. They finally decide to do so and then there’s no permit. Right now I’m elevating this to the country’s highest authorities."

Until the highest authorities give the green light though, we’ll keep wetting our appetite for more international stars falling in love with Cuba and filming here. It’s only a matter of time.
