Chanel continues to celebrate Cuba around the world with its cruise campaign

Posted: 04-Nov-16 10:13

The luxury fashion brand did not just stop at hosting Cuba’s first ever international runway show on Havana’s lengthy Paseo del Prado last May. Fast-forward five months and Karl Lagerfeld’s 2016-2017 Cuba-inspired Cruise Collection is still being showcased across the globe, bringing Cuban icons to a wider international audience of Chanel fans. New photos of Chanel’s models perpetuate the image of sultry Havana, its streets and its scenic coastline, in line with Lagerfeld’s latest designs.

Chanel continues to celebrate Cuba around the world with its cruise campaign

Chanel’s arrival to Havana last May made waves, gigantic waves, as it brought to the country not only one of the world’s largest and most prestigious fashion brands, but also 700 illustrious guests (among them Tilda Swindon and Van Diesel to name a few) and 45 top models (with Gisele Bundchen making her first catwalk appearance in Cuba after her announced retirement in April 2015), as well as the fashion house’s famous head designer and creative director, Karl Lagerfeld.

Last May, Havana welcomed a flurry of fashion-loving celebrities who came to view the presentation of Chanel’s 2016/2017 collection, beautifully presented in the most original and evocative of locations, one that also echoed the colours, textures and patterns of the garments themselves, as it was Cuba that inspired Karl Lagerfeld for the creation of this latest campaign, and not the other way around.

After Chanel’s ground-breaking runway fashion show in Havana, Karl Lagerfeld didn’t exactly rest on his laurels and has been busy showing his Cuba-inspired collection around the world. How? By juxtaposing his latest haute-couture wear against a series of iconic Cuban backgrounds that seem to flow in perfect harmony with the black Che-inspired berets, playful takes on Chanel’s signature tweed, military greens (a nod to the Cuban revolution) and flowery touristy touches that evoke the tropical nature of this Caribbean island.

Five months on, after the success and controversy that Chanel’s Cuba presentation generated among fans and critics alike, new images of the campaign take to the cover of fashion magazines and catalogues.

New photographs where models can be seen wearing the new Chanel Cruise Collection 2016/2017 while on Cuba, see the likes of Stella Tennant and Mica Arganaraz strut their stuff along Havana’s bright streets and rocky coast. Full of the so-called shabby chic glamour that seems to be in fashion (and no place exemplifies shabby chic better than Cuba, which, consequentially, also happens to be very much in vogue), the photographs perfectly go with the fashion house’s seasonal theme.

According to a release, the colour palette matches that of Havana’s vibrant facades, while several takes on the “guayabera” (a traditional local shirt typically worn by men) were yet another nod to Cuba’s peculiarities, and ultimately the way Karl Lagerfeld envisions Cuba, his romantic ideas of how he perceives the country and his play on colours and textures to capture its essence. As he himself openly admitted:

“This is all about my vision of Cuba. But of course, what do I know about Cuba? It is very childish, my idea."

Whether it’s cashing in on Cuba stereotypes or not, considering the amount of editorials that have been shot in Cuba over the last year or so - with Rihanna’s Cuba visit gracing Vanity Fair’s front cover and the cover of Vogue Ukraine’s July 2016 issue also having been shot in Havana - t’s easy to predict this won’t be the last of haute-couture fashion campaigns to be set on the island, or inspired (even if partly) by it. We look forward to it.
