Influx of Japanese tourists expected to keep growing in 2016

Following the Japanese Prime Minister’s visit to Cuba last summer, ties between both countries continue to develop strongly and tourism in particular seems to be taking a favourable turn. According to Masaru Watanabe, the Ambassador of this Asian country in the island, the number of Japanese tourists arriving in Cuba is expected to keep growing in 2016.

Influx of Japanese tourists expected to keep growing in 2016

Historically an important market for the Caribbean country, Japan is now becoming one of the main sources of tourism for Cuba. The Ambassador of this Asian country in the island, Masaru Watanabe, recently declared that the influx of Japanese travellers was expected to increase in 2016. After an already significant growth last year, when the number of visitors rose by 80 per cent, this tendency marks a positive future for the travel industry between both countries.

Routes between the two nations have been developing recently. Since August, the Japanese JTB tour operator has been providing charter flights to the Jose Marti International Airport (HAV) in the capital. This new connection covers Tokyo-Havana route with a stopover in Tijuana, and is carried through the Aeromexico airline.

Cuba’s charming capital, Havana, comes out at the top of the list for travel to Cuba. According to a report by Prensa Latina, the ambassador expressed his desire that Japanese tourists visit Cuban cities other than Havana, in particular Santiago de Cuba, the second largest in the country and one of his favorite for its historical heritage, vibrant ambiance and cultural values.

The announcements of expected tourism growth come after the visit of the Japanese Prime Minister to the island last summer. Watanabe commented on how this event meant a great deal for the rapprochement of both countries and the opportunity of continuing to strengthen ties in the future:

“Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit has been a tremendous achievement. We only have a prime minister, and it’s rather difficult for him to normally leave the country, and his coming to Cuba is something that hadn’t occurred in the last 400 years.”

Nonetheless, the increase of Japanese visitors isn’t the only bind that unites both nations. Japan and Cuba, though thousands of miles apart, are two islands who suffer from the same disastrous natural phenomenon. The Japanese government showed great solidarity for the Cuban people by sending a donation for the victims of Hurricane Matthew, which devastated eastern Cuba only weeks ago.

This gesture proves the harmonious relationship between Japan and Cuba, countries that share historic bonds. The ambassador mentioned how Japanese culture still lived on in the island through the approximately 1,400 Cubans of Japanese origin, living mainly on the Isle of Youth and in Havana and the Santiago family, Fujishiro, whose ancestry was Japanese. Keniche Fujishiro, who settled in Santiago after his arrival on 28th May, 1913, is the subject of a book “A Japanese in Santiago de Cuba – A Love Story”, written by his granddaughter Lidia Sanchez Fujishiro, who manages to gracefully tell the story that intertwines two distant yet close cultures.
