Is Cuba really the Caribbean’s hottest destination?

Posted: 14-Nov-16 11:01

There’s no doubting that with the lifting of trade embargoes and new flight routed from the US to Cuba, travel to the Caribbean island sounds incredibly positive. However, there are some voices that seem to be more skeptical about whether the country is really the place to visit in 2016.

Is Cuba really the Caribbean’s hottest destination?

It seems like everyone is talking about one of the world’s most culturally isolated islands right now. New travel routes offering a never-before-seen number of direct flights from the US to Cuba, combined with the lifting of trade embargoes that had stunted economic growth for over 50 years – not least in the tourism sector – mean that it has never been easier to reach cities like Havana.

The result is an increase in inbound travel to the country.

But how much of the Cuba hype is just that – hot air blown from the mouths of those who stand to benefit the most from relaxed rules and regulations for Americans looking to land in this iconic nation?

According to a recent article on the website Travel Pulse, the jury seems to be relatively divided at the moment. For some, it seems the impetus to go to Cuba as soon as possible has never been greater.

Greg Geronemus, CEO of smarTours, told the digital publication:

“Universally most of our clients tell us they want to go now before Cuba changes with more tourists, more hotels, more cruise ships, more traffic etcetera,”

and added:

“They want to experience Havana now before it becomes another Miami Beach or Cancun. And our customers tell us that Cuba definitely lives up to its hype. They all say it’s an amazing, memorable travel experience.”

Perhaps more amazingly, though, these views are not shared by everyone.

Pam Walker of Walker Adventures Limited, an affiliate of Travel Experts, Inc, said:

“Having been to Cuba in February, I do think there was a lot of hype. What really bothers me is that the infrastructure in Cuba itself is not there to handle all those flights that are now going. Plus prices are have gone out of sight!”

Regardless, it seems that for the most part the allure of the Communist state remains hard to ignore. Since Washington approved travel for anyone that meets 12 points of criteria the number of bookings has grown exponentially, hence more and more scheduled airlines now being given rights to run new routes from a selection of U.S. airports, including Newark, Fort Lauderdale, and Los Angeles.

In order for US citizens to enter Cuba, they must be in possession of a visa, and be able to prove they are travelling for a valid reason. These include official government business; journalistic activity; professional research; educational activities; religious activities; public performances; athletic and other competitions; support for the Cuban people; and humanitarian projects. However, even then it is recommended to research the rules of passage fully before embarking on any journey to the island to avoid unexpected complications on arrival.
