U.S. business coalition puts pressure on Trump to maintain good relations with Cuba

A powerful allegiance of U.S. businessman and major U.S. companies is hoping to appeal to the businessman in Trump and persuade him to turn his back on his political promise of cutting ties with Cuba. Dozens of large American firms are lining up to tug at Trump’s ear and convince them it makes enormous business and political sense to maintain good relations with their Caribbean neighbour as it hugely benefits the U.S. economy.

U.S. business coalition puts pressure on Trump to maintain good relations with Cuba

Concerned about the state of their business endeavours in the island and the drastic turn for the worse they could suffer if Trump reverts back on Obama’s policies, a powerful coalition of large American companies who have heavily invested (or are about to invest) in Cuba, are preparing to hold special talks with the new U.S President-elect to convince him of turning back on his electoral vow to cut ties with Cuba.

So far, during the speeches and public address he has made following his election as the next U.S. President, Trump has remained mum on the Cuba issue, but at some point over the next few weeks, he is expected to clarify his stance on the matter. His final verdict on the U.S.-Cuba approach that his administration will adopt over the next few years is a critical one and one that U.S. businessmen and Cubans alike are dreading and awaiting with a certain degree of fear and uncertainty.

During his election talk, Mr Trump vowed to close the recently re-established U.S. Embassy in Havana and put an end to all the newly formed economic bonds between the two countries, as well as put back in place old regulations that would make it difficult for average Americans to visit the country as freely as they have been able to over the last couple of years.

Gearing up to the dire effects a negative Trump stance on Cuba could have on their new business ventures in the island, dozens of large American companies, not least of all the eight approved U.S. airlines to fly commercial routes to Cuba, most of which are already operating flights to several ports in the island, are actively uniting forces to try and persuade the President-elect to back away from his electoral pledges and listen to his business instinct.

The list of interested American businesses isn’t exclusively made up of airlines though, with Carnival Corp. already operating a regular Cuba cruise, Airbnb giving online access to over 8,000 Cuban owners renting rooms for travellers and hotel giant Starwood Hotels and Resorts already running three Cuban hotels.

Then, we also have big technology firms like Cisco and Google, working hard at developing and improving Cuba’s outdated and basic telecommunications infrastructure while mobile phone companies have started to offer roaming services in the island and banks are enabling their customers to use U.S.-issued credit and debit cards in Cuba.

Speaking about these companies’ uneasiness and concern about Trump’s possible future actions on Cuba, a Miami-based attorney representing many U.S. business with interests in Cuba said:

"Everybody is looking for a seat at the table. All of us who are stakeholders in Cuba are very active in lobbying. At this very moment, they are seeking an audience with the teams that will be part of the new administration."

However, on the other side of the spectrum we have the long-standing, also Miami-based political coalition fiercely opposed to any position, law or regulation that in some way benefits the Cuban government. And this is an important block, one that was largely responsible for Donald Trump’s electoral win in Florida, so the President-elect cannot just brush them off, at least not without major consequences and revolt. But then again, we’re talking about a man that goes back on his word time and time again. This is a very singular individual who changes stance as it best suits his personal interests at the time, so maybe not all is lost yet and we can hope he ditches his previous pledge when it comes to addressing Cuba. Fingers crossed that he will not tarnish Obama’s legacy and unprecedented historic progress in this respect.
