Enrique Iglesias films latest music video in the streets of Havana

Las Friday wrapped up the production of Enrique Iglesias’ latest music video, which was entirely filmed in Havana, among fans, professional dancers and a duo of Puerto Rican rappers. Giving the Cuban audience the impromptu surprise of being able to appear in his newest video clip, Enrique shot in various Havana locations during the two days of filming and promised to be back to treat Cubans to a live concert.

Enrique Iglesias films latest music video in the streets of Havana

We knew it was coming, we just didn’t know it’d be so soon into the new year when we last told you about Enrique Iglesias’ plans to film a music video in Cuba. Hundreds of young fans rushed to Havana’s Salon Rosado de la Tropical last Friday to be part of Enrique Iglesias’ newest video for his latest single “Subeme la Radio”, which was filmed in various Havana locations over the course of two days and-a-half, culminating in a very festive mega-party at one of the city’s most popular live music venues and open-air concert spaces.

Taking fans by surprise, Enrique Iglesias decided to treat his Cuban audience to participate in the last day of shooting, with the doors of La Tropical being wide open to everyone who could squeeze themselves inside. After the filming was wrapped up, Enrique and his team thanked the hundreds of youths warmly “for the kindness of participating and the love shown”.

But the Cuban audience weren’t the only ones delighted, the Spanish singer enjoyed his experience singing and filming in Cuba so much, he promised to be back to stage a concert in the very near future, and not just one concert, as reportedly Enrique plans for a series of them in Havana and Santiago de Cuba. Remember, we told you first!

Working in collaboration with Cuban singer and songwriter, Descemer Bueno (who loaned Enrique the song for his newest video clip, as he once also did for his previous mega-hit “Bailando”, also partly filmed in Cuba) Enrique didn’t fly alone to Cuba, as Puerto Rican rappers Zion and Lennox joined him and also participated in the video. To see the end result of such a talented group of artists joining force, we’ll have to wait a bit longer though.

The video’s director and photographer, Alejandro Perez, who also directed Enrique’s previous video collaboration with Cuban duo Gente de Zona and Descemer Bueno for the song Bailando (for which three different versions were filmed), spoke to Cubadebate about the filming process, and the singer’s first time interacting with a Cuban audience:

“It was great to surprise the public with Enrique’s shooting in Cuba. Both Enrique and the Cuban audience were anxiously anticipating it, and the opportunity came thanks to Descemer’s song, which has definitely worked.”

The other invited guests participating in the video, Zion and Lenox were also pleasantly surprised by the warmth of the Cuban people and declared going to Cuba had been the best thing that had happened to them in the last few years. Zion stated that being in Cuba was a personal and professional achievement, adding:

“Cuba has taught me many things in a little time; its culture, its happiness, its humility, values that have left me speechless. It’s not the same to hear it from other sources than living it when you come to this country.”

This latest music video, breathing life into Enrique Iglesias newest music release “Subeme la Radio” was shot in various Havana locations, from Old Havana to pop-up stages in other corners of the capital, but the big “piece de resistance” will no doubt be the shooting in the city’s emblematic Salon Rosado de La Tropical, a popular venue famous for staging salsa concerts, which was fully opened to the public during Enrique’s video filming. Once the video comes out we can look forward to really spontaneous burst of “cubania” as the audience sings and dances to the music.

“We planned for two days of filming and we ended up doing two-and-a-half. I’m very satisfied of what we’ve achieved so far and especially for the fact that the invited artists got to know how we Cubans really are in Cuba, something that has fascinated them.”

Also according to Perez, Enrique Iglesias was positively astonished “with the idiosyncrasy of the locals, and Havana as a city”. On his part, the song’s author, Descemer Bueno added that it seemed unreal, only eleven days into the new year to have accomplished a dream of his, sharing a song such as “Subeme la Radio” with Enrique Iglesias in Cuba, a tune he’s convinced will be a resounding hit, precisely for being shot in the island. We cannot disagree with that, but we’ll just have to see the end result of such collaboration, we can hardly wait!
