Cuba's top 5 best all-inclusive resorts as picked by Traveller's Choice Awards 2016

An article by Cartas de Cuba recently echoed what are currently considered Cuba's top five all-inclusive resorts. We've revised their selection and adjusted it to feature the island's current cream of the crop when it comes to all-inclusives by the beach, as listed by TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice Awards 2016. The five we list here have all been included in TripAdvisor's Top 25 All-Inclusive Resorts – Caribbean 2016, and as such are Cuba's top award-winning all-inclusive resorts.

Cuba's top 5 best all-inclusive resorts as picked by Traveller's Choice Awards 2016

Cuba’s hotel industry is growing faster than ever. Even when this pace might be considered slow by international standards, more Cuba hotels have sprung up over the last couple of years than in decades as the island gears up to accommodate a potential figure of 5.4 million annual visitors. Last year, it welcomed a record-breaking number of over 4 million visitors, a considerable improvement on the previous year when it recorded 3.4 million.

This 13 per cent growth is not only indicative of the island’s growth in popularity, but also signals the efforts made to accommodate a larger influx of tourists with the refurbishment and expansion of old hotels, the sprucing up of existing ones and the opening brand new ones.

Beyond the hotel industry, the market for “casas particulares”, Cuba’s answer to B&B-type accommodation, has also grown considerably, more so since owners were able to start advertising their rental properties on AirBnb’s online platform.

But going back to hotels, a few years back Cuba’s hospitality reputation wasn’t the most prestigious and it lagged behind other Caribbean destinations. Fast-forward a couple of years and some of Cuba’s all-inclusive beach resorts get outstanding recognition and praise from past international guests, as recorded by the world’s most famous online travel reviews portal - TripAdvisor.

During last year’s Travellers’ Choice Awards 2016, a total of five Cuban all-inclusive resorts were ranked in the list of Top 25 All-Inclusive Resorts – Caribbean, showing the world Cuba had been able to drive up standards and garner the admiration of top industry experts and well-seasoned travellers alike.

As you will read below, Melia (Paradisus) and Blue Diamond (Royalton) crown themselves as the top two foreign hotel chains operating in the island, earning Cuba the prestige it sought for years. All of the winning resorts belong to either the Spanish or Canadian hotel brand, with Melia beating Blue Diamond by one, thanks to its three winning resorts versus Royalton’s two.

  1. Paradisus Rios de Oro Resort & Spa, Guardalavaca, Holguin

Ranking the highest of them all, in the 11th position, we have one of the oldest of Cuba resorts in the list; the Paradisus Rios de Oro Resort & Spa in Holguin’s Guardalavaca beach resort. This is the only hotel in the list to be located in the island’s eastern region and is one of four in this list to cater to adults over 18 exclusively. Its location on a secluded section of Playa Esmeralda within the Parque Natural Bahia de Naranjo truly stands out, as does its wide array of luxury services.

This resort truly feels worlds away, and that goes a long way for explaining its unique appeal. Set in a lush eco-reserve and surrounded by the purest, wildest and most beautiful nature, this eco-retreat coexists in perfect harmony with its surroundings. It even boasts its own botanical garden and natural orchidarium. Guests can book themselves in at either of 354 rooms, including the exclusive Master Junior Suite and Garden Villas, which come with private plunge pool and direct beach access. There’s also a large Yhi Spa “Aguas de Oro”, eight restaurants, seven bars and a long list of luxury facilities, amenities and privileges.

  2. Royalton Cayo Santa Maria, Villa Clara

Ranking in at the number 13 spot on TripAdvisor’s 2016 Top 25 Caribbean All-Inclusive Resorts list, next up we have yet another luxurious resort, designed for adults only and the first (but not last, as you soon shall see) to be located in Cuba’s up-and-coming Cayo Santa Maria key, just offshore the north-central province of Villa Clara, which is connected to mainland via a causeway.

Focused on providing couples the ultimate romantic escape, Royalton Cayo Santa Maria is a top choice for honeymooners and those in search of uninterrupted bliss and luxury. The resort’s All-In Luxury concept means guests enjoy regal furnishings with an authentic Caribbean flair. It offers 122 guest rooms (24 of which are sea-view, plus 4 Royalton Suites) seven restaurants and bars (including a 24-hour snack bar), a Royal Spa and 24-hour butler service.

  3. Melia Cayo Coco, Jardines del Rey

Following close behind, our next property ranks at number 16 and is the only one to be located in the Jardines del Rey archipelago, granting perhaps the most paradisiac of settings in an enclave known for its floury-soft white sands, calm shallow lagoon waters and ideal year-long climate.

This is probably the oldest hotel in the list and has long enjoyed a good reputation. Guests can choose from 250 guest rooms in the form of bungalows standing on stilts over the lagoon waters and connected to land via Cuba’s first stone causeway to be built over sea. A Day around free concept allows guests to dine around at sister Melia properties in both Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo and its virginal beaches are ideal for diving and fishing.

  4. Royalton Hicacos Varadero Resort & Spa

A property formerly owned by Sandals and previously known as the Sandals Royal Hicacos, in December 2014, Blue Diamond took over in and revamped it as the new Royalton Hicacos Varadero Resort & Spa, maintaining (and improving) their luxury concept for adults -only while pushing up standards. Ranking in at number 24, the Royalton brand took this property to the next level and repeat guests have certainaily noticed, with TripAdvisor reviewers penning statements such as “Sometimes change is good”, or “Better than when it was Sandals Hicacos”.

Not only has the Royalton brand expanded on the number of restaurants (four specialty dining venues plus one buffet), they’ve also refurbished the six ideally located bars, added beds on the beach and pool while refreshing the look of the front lobby and lobby bar. To top it all off they’ve also added professional fitness classes with certified instructors allowing guests to choose from yoga, Zumba and aquaerobics – and there’s only a handful of resorts in Cuba that cater this well (namely others also owned by Blue Diamond).

  5. Melia Buenavista, Cayo Santa Maria, Villa Clara, ranking 25

Taking the very last spot is the newest resort on the list, the perfectly secluded Melia Buenavista. Having only opened a little over a year ago, it has worked really hard to set precedents and amass good reviews on a relatively short time. Located on the increasingly popular Cayo Santa Maria key, yet offering total exclusity and privacy thanks to its secluded location, the Melia Buenavista is all about naturally exceptional luxury for adults only.

Enjoying an enviable setting in the midst of a World Biosphere Reserve, facing not one but three virginal beaches and untoched coves, this eco-resort offers the additional benefit of personalised butler service, first class facilities and unique touches that include a Yhi Spa with individual eco beach huts, an onsite saxophonist, eco walks, cava sunsets and gourmet dining. Guest can take in the most amazing views from their bungalows, built on stilts over a crystalline lagoon and build in a way that respects the local environment.
